Explore Lage Mierde on short village walks and longer hikes. You’ll also find a church with building features from different centuries, distinctive farmhouse architecture and glimpses of farm life. During your stay, you can choose between exploring the countryside, discovering local history and enjoying regional food.

Walking from the Dorpsplein

The Sint-Stephanus walks start at the Dorpsplein. They include the green Raamsloop route, which is 3 kilometres long and wheelchair-accessible. Another option is the 5.5-kilometre Ommetje Lage Mierde. This route also starts at the Dorpsplein, first passing through the village and then continuing between the fields.

For a considerably longer hike, try the “Lage Mierde – Panneven – Landgoed de Utrecht” walking route. It starts at the Dorpsplein in the village centre and passes through heathland, forests and villages, by Panneven and across Landgoed de Utrecht. The route is just over 16 kilometres long. The routes therefore differ clearly in length: from 3 kilometres to the 5.5-kilometre village walk and a hike of more than 16 kilometres.

The Sint-Stephanus routes are intended to give visitors and residents a better picture of Lage Mierde and its surroundings, both today and in the past. Route details may change, so check the relevant route description before setting out. Local conditions on the Ommetje may also vary.

Church architecture and farmhouse architecture

The Roman Catholic Church of St Stephen at Dorpsplein 1 is listed as a Rijksmonument in the national heritage register. Its basilican nave dates from the 15th century and is Gothic; the transept and choir were added in 1912. The sloping buttresses on the west side of the tower and its polygonal stair turret are notable architectural features. The tower also houses a mechanical clock made by Kerkhof en Zn. in 1909, which is no longer in operation.

Another chapter in the area’s architectural history is the villa “De Mispelbocht,” built in 1932. It features elements of the Amsterdam School and Nieuwe Zakelijkheid (Dutch New Objectivity). Its style and well-preserved exterior make it architecturally significant; the aesthetic quality of its design is particularly important to the townscape of Lage Mierde.

At Wellenseind 6 stands a restored farmhouse of the Kempische langgevelboerderij (long-gabled farmhouse) type. Its features include a thatched wolf-roof with a tiled base, cross-window frames with small panes and shutters. Together with the villa and the church, these buildings offer different points of reference for understanding the architectural history of the village.

Countryside, farm life and food

Lage Mierde lies on a ridge between two rivers that converge to the north of the village. The Mispeleindse Heide, also part of Landgoed de Utrecht, is also located to the north. This setting adds a tangible landscape dimension to the range of walking options.

At Voor Anker in Lage Mierde, visitors can stroll around grounds with orchards and gardens and see farm animals. The artisanal kitchen prepares dishes with ingredients from its own orchards and gardens, from the estate’s Brandrode cattle and from regional partners. The menu may change with the seasons.

Food grows in abundance in the Voedselbos Lage Mierde. Visitors can unwind there and work with nature. This offers a different focus from a walk at Voor Anker: here, the emphasis is on working with nature and the food grown in the forest garden.

Various cycling routes of different lengths also start at Voor Anker on Landgoed Wellenseind. So, as well as the walking routes described above, you can include cycling trips in your plans. Discover more destinations: Reusel.
