Vlijmen offers different ways to experience the landscape: at Vlijmens Ven, rare purple moor-grass meadows and colourful spring fields shape the scenery; at De Moerputten, walking trails cross a restored railway bridge and wooden boardwalks through the marsh. The area also has distinctive traces of local history. If you are looking for hotels in Vlijmen, you can plan your stay around nature, cultural heritage or activities, depending on what matters for your trip.
Moorland and Trails
De Moerputten is the only known habitat of the rare large blue butterfly in the Netherlands. The entrance is at Venkantbrug on Heidijk in Vlijmen; check before your visit whether any temporary restrictions are in place. You can walk across the restored, 600-metre-long Moerputten railway bridge and along wooden boardwalks through the marsh.
The Boswachterspad Bruggenroute Moerputten follows unpaved paths and includes stairs and a wooden boardwalk. These trail conditions are an important planning consideration; after wet weather, it is advisable to check local conditions. By contrast, the walking route through Vlijmens Ven crosses rare purple moor-grass meadows, found in few places in the Netherlands, with a rich variety of plant life. The fields can be colourful in spring, although flowering varies from season to season.
The two nature areas offer different highlights: at Vlijmens Ven, the focus is on plant life and seasonal meadows, while at De Moerputten, the bridge and marsh boardwalks shape the walk. Het Engelermeer beach is also set in a distinctive landscape: it lies between the meadows of Vlijmen and the Engelense Polder.
Local History and Monuments
A V-shaped monument on Plein commemorates the V1 bombs that struck Vlijmen several times in the final months of the Second World War. The monument was unveiled in 2022. Vlijmen is also part of the ’s-Hertogenbosch–Heusden defence line of the Zuiderwaterlinie, another historical connection alongside the local wartime commemoration.
The Grote Kerk has a single-nave body dating from the 14th century, with traces of pointed-arch windows on its south side. Four text panels inside the church date from 1659. A section dating from the 13th century was raised in the 15th century with the addition of a bell stage. The De Valk brewery complex at Meliestraat 20/22 is now a Rijksmonument, a nationally listed monument; the brewing vats have been preserved. The ensemble at Molenhoek consists of three wooden electricity pylons.
Plan Your Route and Other Activities
The Vlijmen route of the Zuiderwaterlinie starts at the old town hall, in front of the municipal building on Julianastraat. You can park in Van Greunsvenpark for this route; access is via Julianastraat. Check the current signs and parking regulations before setting off.
De Hoge Heide offers bowling, indoor football, interactive darts, floorshuffle, a sjoelbak shuffleboard bar and squash. There is also a fenced-in playground for children. If you plan to enjoy these activities, check their availability and the playground facilities in advance. This lets you treat the activities as a separate focus alongside nature trails and local history, without trying to fit everything into a single outing.
