Fortifications, historic buildings and water shape the different sides of Heusden. The Heusden Vesting walking route is 3.5 kilometres long and leads through the old fortified town on the Bergsche Maas; water is at its heart. A cruise with Rondvaart Wiljo passes the fortifications and goes through the harbour. At the Gouverneurshuis, a museum tells the story of the town. You can choose between different ways to explore: a walk through the town, a trip around the harbour or a museum visit.

Fortified Town and Views

Green town ramparts and restored façades define Heusden’s historic atmosphere. During the restoration, the fortifications and the filled-in town harbour were restored. From the ramparts, you can look out over the landscapes of Brabant and Gelderland, the Bergsche Maas and the restored town.

Churches and Architectural History

The oldest surviving building phases of the Grote of Sint-Catharinakerk probably date from the second half of the 13th century. The Catharijnekerk was built in the style of Kempense Gothic, a regional variant of Gothic architecture. The town’s history thus brings together a cautious dating of the church’s building phases and a regional architectural style.

Museum at the Gouverneurshuis

The Gouverneurshuis is a listed building dating from 1592 and houses a museum that tells the story of Heusden. The building and the museum’s subject come together here: the town’s history is told in the historic Gouverneurshuis. On the ground floor, the museum café and the Gildenzaal are accessible to wheelchair users and people with a rollator.

Explore Heusden Vesting on Foot

The Heusden Vesting walking route is a varied walk through the old fortified town, with a focus on water. It starts at Heusden’s former town hall, the Toeristisch Informatiepunt (TIP). The former town hall is now used as a visitor centre. At the TIP, you can get town maps, cycling and walking routes, souvenirs and information about the region. The starting point is therefore also a place to get your bearings, while the 3.5-kilometre route incorporates the theme of water into your exploration of the town.

Harbour and Cruise

The cruise with Rondvaart Wiljo follows the fortifications and passes through Heusden’s picturesque harbour. During the trip, the skipper tells you about the fortress’s rich history, remarkable buildings and hidden stories. If you would like to do more than simply admire Heusden’s buildings and hear about their history, the cruise offers an additional perspective.

Choose between the walk and the cruise according to the perspective you prefer: on foot, the focus is a 3.5-kilometre route centred on water; on board, it is the harbour, the fortifications and the skipper’s stories. Both activities include Heusden’s waterways and fortress heritage, but in different ways.

Getting There and Finding Your Way

Heusden Vesting can be reached via scenic walking trails and by bicycle, boat, coach or car. The TIP can help you find your way with town maps, cycling and walking routes, and regional information. The travel options and routes in the area give you several starting points for planning your visit.
