Meadows, fields, wet woodlands, and traces of history offer a range of themes for your trip to Soerendonk. The landscape of the Barony of Cranendonck, nature watching, cycling, and local history each add their own character. When planning, you can decide whether you would rather observe the landscape, explore by bicycle, or focus on cultural history.

Landscape and Nature Watching

The heart of the Barony of Cranendonck resembles an old Brabant cultural landscape: meadows and fields shape the scenery, along with woodland, streams, hedgerows, and tree-lined banks. Part of the barony is designated as the “Wet Pearl of Nature.” The nature reserve depends on a high groundwater level or seepage water, making the water balance an important aspect of this protected landscape.

At Soerendonks Goor, the “Hou it Moi” birdwatching hut by the water offers the chance to observe herons, water pipits, ducks, and other bird species. Sightings depend on the season, so the time of year matters for your observation plans. The hut has picnic benches and makes a good stopping point on walks around Soerendonks Goor or Gastelse Heide. Check before your visit whether the benches are still there.

Cranendonckse bos is a varied landscape of wet woodland that transitions into the valley of the Buulder Aa. Alongside the cultural landscape of meadows and fields, you can also explore a wet woodland and valley area.

Explore by Bicycle

From the center of Soerendonk, you can cycle to explore the Groote Heide. Two marked mountain biking routes start at the Baronie, Cranendonck 1 in Soerendonk, and together they are 60 kilometers long. When cycling to the Groote Heide, the focus is on one destination; for mountain biking, the two marked routes share a starting point and have a combined length of 60 kilometers. Route conditions and signage may change. Check the latest conditions before setting off.

Traces of Local History

Kasteel Cranendonck was built around 1250 between Maarheeze and Soerendonk. In 1673, the French largely destroyed the castle. A walking tour of the historic greens also reveals different facets of Soerendonk’s history, using sound, images, and QR-code information pillars.

The Church of Sint Jan Onthoofding at Dorpsstraat 25 is a municipal monument. The church building was constructed in 1836–1838 and extended in 1932. It also houses the oldest surviving instrument made by the Vermeulen family of organ builders. The building’s history and the instrument offer different insights into the history of the church and the family’s surviving work.

An Agricultural Specialty

Het Zuyderblad tea plantation in Soerendonk is the first tea plantation in the Netherlands. Several thousand tea plants grow there, spread across three tea gardens. Tea cultivation adds an agricultural dimension to the nature and history themes. The information about the plants and gardens may change over time.
