The foundations of the former Kasteel Cranendonck are outlined in the landscape: visible contours reveal the shape of the once-standing building, even though no walls remain. The surrounding area is ideal for a walk or as a stopover on a cycling tour. These traces of the past give Cranendonck a distinctive perspective, alongside the border landscape, small nature areas and a variety of routes that shape a stay here.

Discover monuments and border history

During Open Monumentendag Cranendonck, selected monuments in the municipality open each year on the second full weekend in September, with themed activities. The locations and events included in the programme may vary from year to year; check the dates before your trip.

Budel-Dorplein has a distinctive historical character: thanks to its many monuments, the former industrial village has protected village-scape status and considerable cultural-historical value. Sights include the miniature prison “‘t Prisonneke” and the renovated Cantinetheater. The Smokkel- en Grensmuseum Cranendonck explores smuggling in the border region. It also offers a 20-minute film about local smuggling history. If you are planning a visit, it is a good idea to check the current opening hours and programme.

Border landscapes and nature areas

Cranendonck is part of the cross-border Natuurgrenspark De Groote Heide, which covers about 6,000 hectares. In Buulderbroek, its designation as a “Natte Natuurparel” (Wet Nature Jewel), high or potential groundwater-dependent nature values, and habitats for birds and insects come together. Cranendonckse Bos reveals another side of the landscape: water-rich areas and marshes define the area, while wooden walkways make it easy to explore.

The Pan nature area lies northeast of Maarheeze and covers about 300 hectares. On its southern side, deciduous and mixed forests give way to an area of untouched heath and small marshes. The Immenhof adds a freely accessible bee and flower garden to the area’s nature destinations; it is open at all times. As local conditions may change, it is worth checking current access information before your visit.

Exploring on foot

The walking and hiking options vary in both length and style. “Rondje Baronie & Cranendoncks Bos” is an approximately five-kilometre walk along the junction network through the Baronie of Cranendonck and the surrounding countryside. The six-kilometre Brinkenwandeling in Soerendonk can be done on foot or by bicycle and is interactive. For a shorter interactive outing, “Beleef Budel met Ridder Kuno” is a three-kilometre walk that can be experienced using an app or QR codes on your smartphone.

Nature watching is also part of the route offering: the route through Soerendonks Goor passes the “Hou it Moi” bird hide. From there, you can observe the water and birds without disturbing them; access conditions may vary seasonally. The garden at IVN Cranendonck’s Belevingstuin features sensory elements including a barefoot path, play equipment for children and a bee hotel. Each of these options has its own focus, from walking through the countryside to exploring through play.

Cycling routes with different themes

Cranendonck has two signposted mountain bike routes, totalling 60 kilometres. The starting board is at the Baronie, at Cranendonck 1 in Soerendonk. The approximately 44-kilometre Smokkelroute offers a different experience: it follows the bicycle junction network, can be ridden in either direction and runs through the Dutch-Belgian border region between the Achelse Kluis and Budel. The 40-kilometre Teuten Tocht combines cycling with the history of the Teuten, historical travelling merchants. The Molenroute Cranendonck passes the municipality’s remaining windmills. Check the route signs and current route conditions before setting off.

Regional information and products

VVV Cranendonck provides information about walking and cycling routes and accommodation. Regional products, souvenirs, gifts and VVV gift vouchers are also sold there. The blueberry drink “'t Smokkelaartje” from Fruitbedrijf Jan Janssen is available, among other places, at the streekproductenwinkel at Bergbosweg 17 in Budel and from the VVV; availability may change. In Soerendonk, a vineyard and a distinctive tea plantation are part of the local product offering. Molen Janzona is a whisky sales outlet as well as a distillery.
