Nistelrode lies on the edge of De Maashorst. Nature, a cycling route through several towns, and traces of architectural and historic heritage offer different themes for a stay. The marked hiking trails around the Natuurcentrum add options for planning on foot; the history of church architecture and a Calvary monument offer specific cultural topics.

De Maashorst: Landscape and Grazing Animals

De Maashorst comprises extensive forests, including coniferous forests, as well as heathland, marshes, wind-blown sand, and glacial erratics. Alongside its present-day natural features, the erratics give the landscape a geological dimension. Since 2016, wisents, Exmoor ponies, and Tauros cattle have lived in De Maashorst as large grazing animals. The landscape features and wildlife thus offer distinct nature-related themes. Erratics are large boulders transported by glaciers during the Ice Age and left behind when the ice melted. Wind-blown sand forms when wind shifts loose grains of sand; the two terms thus describe different processes that have shaped the landscape.

Hiking Trails and Cycling Route

Natuurcentrum De Maashorst, at Erenakkerstraat 5 in Nistelrode, is the starting point and information center for all activities in the area. There are several marked hiking trails around the Natuurcentrum; trail descriptions are available at the information desk. For planning a walk, this provides both trails around the center and a specific information point.

For cyclists, the Molenaarsfietsroute offers a different option: the 39-kilometer route passes through Nistelrode, Vorstenbosch, Heeswijk-Dinther, and Uden. Korenmolen Windlust Nistelrode is part of the route. Thus, several marked hiking trails around the Natuurcentrum can be contrasted with a cycling route of a set total length and sequence of towns. The mill is another named landmark along the route.

Architectural History and Heritage

Sint Lambertuskerk is a three-aisled neoclassical pseudo-basilica. It was built in two phases to replace an older chapel; a transept was added in 1929. The year refers to this extension, not to the entire church building. The church is also one of the surviving Waterstaatskerken in Noord-Brabant. “Three-aisled” and “neoclassical” describe the building’s form, while the construction phases and later extension describe its development over time. A pseudo-basilica has a higher central nave than its side aisles, but no clerestory with windows. “Three-aisled” refers to the central nave and the two side aisles. A transept crosses the nave and adds to the floor plan.

A rare Calvary monument stands in the Oude Begraafplaats in Nistelrode. It comprises a cast-iron cross with a corpus, as well as two figures of Mary and John carved from French limestone. While the church is characterized by its architectural form and history, the figures and the different materials are the Calvary monument’s distinctive features.
