If you want to combine nature trails with waterside landscapes and local history in Wanssum, there are several ways to do so. Maaspark Ooijen-Wanssum is known for its landscape of water, forests and Maas dunes; hiking trails, cycling routes and monuments reveal other sides of the area. The focus that suits your stay depends on whether you mainly want to spend time outdoors or also include historical sites.

Waterside landscapes between the Maas and Molenbeek

Maaspark Ooijen-Wanssum covers 540 hectares and is considered the largest contiguous Maas nature area in Noord-Limburg. Maas dunes and forests shape the landscape, but water is especially prominent: groundwater rises to the surface and flows through lakes, marshes and streams towards the Maas. Different types of water and land meet in the park.

Maaspark is freely accessible and offers hiking and cycling routes. You can therefore combine your stay with a walk or a bike ride, without having to choose just one way of getting around. The nature and hiking area near the Meulebeek and towards the Geijsteren forests is also part of the recreational landscape around Wanssum.

Wanssum itself is shaped by the Groote Molenbeek and a marina; together, they effectively divide the village into two parts. The valley of the Groote Molenbeek, also known as the Meulebeek, is a five-minute walk from the marina, including with a dog. This makes a detour into the valley a short walk in its own right.

Hiking trails with different character

The Pieterpad passes through Wanssum. The Ronde van Wanssum follows it for part of the way, while also taking in other landscapes. Most of the route is on unpaved paths and uses stepping stones and boardwalks. The sections mentioned include the Wanssum flood relief channel, the Groote Molenbeek valley, the old Maas riverbed and the Wolterkamp valley.

The appeal of this route lies in its succession of different landscape features: it connects river and valley areas with the old Maas riverbed and the flood relief channel. If you prefer to choose freely between walking and cycling, Maaspark also offers both types of routes. This means a specific hiking route and the park’s broader network of paths are available as distinct options.

Cycling and activities on the water

For a bike ride, you can rent bicycles through a collaboration between Wanssum Marina and a local bike shop. Please enquire in advance. The TOP (Toeristisch Overstap Punt) in Wanssum is considered easy to reach by car and has ample parking. Nearby, you’ll find places to eat and cycling facilities, including a charging station for electric bikes.

There are several ways to enjoy the water, too: canoeists can continue as far as Wanssum harbour. In summer, the harbour is considered a good spot for stand-up paddleboarding or a picnic. The suggestions have different focuses: continuing by canoe to the harbour on the one hand, and activities at the harbour in summer on the other.

Monuments and chapels in Wanssum

The village’s places of remembrance commemorate different events. The “Sporen die bleven” monument commemorates the raids of October and November 1944. The Wanssum Liberation Monument commemorates the liberation of Wanssum and the Allied soldiers who fell there. It depicts a watchful soldier in silhouette, made of Corten steel, standing on a plinth. The monument is on the east side of the Groote Molenbeek, on Meerloseweg.

The Leonardus Chapel, also known as the Lindert Chapel, has architectural details worth noting: the brick chapel stands on the edge of Wanssum and has an openwork gable peak. Inside is an altar from Wanssum’s former church, featuring a small image of Saint Leonardus. The Maria-in-de-Nood Chapel has a different style: it was rebuilt as a modern concrete pillar chapel from Kevelaer, designed by Venray architect Lerou, and erected at the corner of Venrayseweg and Pastoorstraat.

Another detail of religious art can be found in Michaëlkerk: a stained-glass window by B. Coppus from Horst, dating from 1965. It depicts the sacrifice of Abraham, as well as Moses with the tablets of the law and the golden calf. Together with the memorials and chapels, it offers a cultural and historical perspective on Wanssum alongside its trails and waterside landscape.
