KasteelruĂŻne Geijsteren dates back to the 13th century and represents the area's long history. Other notable aspects of Geijsteren include a listening post about the history of 1944, historic chapels and a mill with a limited milling season. Depending on whether you are interested in cultural heritage, routes or the landscape, you can focus your plans differently.

Castle Ruins and Remembrance

The castle was surrounded by a moat and was destroyed in 1944–45. The Liberation Route Europe Listening Point 201 is located at Kasteelruïne Geijsteren. There, you can use your smartphone to listen to the story of the British attack on the castle in 1944. The ruins thus bring together two different periods: the 13th-century castle and the account of the attack during the Second World War.

Another cultural and historical theme takes visitors to the Willibrordusput. There, visitors can explore the archaeological history with an app and meet Archie, the virtual archaeologist. Cultural activities are also part of what Geijsteren has to offer: events related to cultural heritage take place there several times a year. If you plan to travel on a specific date, check the current events calendar.

At the shooting range in Geijsteren, groups can shoot rifles under the supervision of the Koninklijk St. Willibrordusgilde. Confirm the arrangements for groups before you arrive. This is a separate, clearly defined activity and should not be assumed to be available without advance planning.

Chapels with Several Historical Layers

The St. Willibrorduskapel contains fabric dating from the 16th century. It was restored in 1641, 1770 and 1896. Inside the chapel are remains of a Régence altarpiece, as well as a 17th-century wooden statue of Saint Willibrord. The building's history and its furnishings thus reflect different periods; the remains of the altarpiece and the dated statue give the chapel a distinctive art-historical character.

The St Annakapelletje also has its own historical context. This wayside shrine, dating from the 18th century, stands on the road to Maashees and contains an Annatrits in the style of the 16th century. Together with the St. Willibrorduskapel, it shows that the area's cultural heritage is not limited to the castle ruins, but also includes smaller religious buildings and their furnishings.

Winter Mill and Landscape

The Rosmolen is a watermill used for grinding grain and a true winter mill. The water flow is sufficient for milling only from October to April. If the mill's operation is important to your trip, take this seasonal limitation into account when planning. This sets the mill apart from the enduring historical information available about the chapels and castle ruins.

Landgoed Geijsteren covers about 700 hectares. It includes nature areas as well as farms with arable fields and pastures; the Oostrumse Molenbeek flows through the estate. This landscape brings together natural areas and land shaped by agriculture. The Pieterpad crosses Landgoed Geijsteren, offering another option when planning local routes.

Choose Routes by Route Type

Visit Geijsteren is a 2.7-kilometre loop for walking and cycling. The LabCache stations can be reached on foot or by bike via the walking junction network. Check the navigation instructions before setting out. The Venray Remembers NL-DE driving route starts at KasteelruĂŻne Geijsteren; it is about 62 kilometres long, crosses the German border and passes four places with a history of the Second World War.

These options offer different route formats: a loop with a stated distance, the Pieterpad route through the estate, or a cross-border driving route.
