In Schin op Geul, limestone landscapes, historic buildings and hiking routes offer different ways to shape a stay. The range of options is especially clear when it comes to the trails: one hike offers three specific distances, while others pass through a succession of distinctive landscapes.

Hiking: Distance or a succession of landscapes

The Kasteelwandeling Schin op Geul offers routes of 4, 6 or 8 kilometres through the area around Schin op Geul and the Geuldal. This lets you choose the length of this hike from the explicitly stated distance options. In the Genhoes area, visitors can hike from Kasteel Genhoes to the De Kluis hermitage.

The Krijtwandeling lus 3 follows the Geul for part of the way and then passes through the Schaelsberg and the Sint-Jansbosch. It runs through the limestone-rich, green surroundings of Schin op Geul in the municipality of Valkenburg aan de Geul. The Door het Gerendal route passes through the Gerendal and includes the Orchideeëntuin, slope forests, standard fruit orchards and pastures where Mergelland sheep graze. These two hikes focus on named landscapes and the route, while the Kasteelwandeling offers a specific choice of distance, with three kilometre options.

Limestone landscape and orchids

In the Genhoes nature area, you’ll find flowering, herb-rich meadows and limestone cliffs that are millions of years old. Another distinctive limestone formation lies at the Daolkesberg near Schin op Geul: the limestone wall there is part of a former marl quarry. The Gerendal also has its own landscape character. It is a long, dry valley south of Schin op Geul; several species of rare wild orchids bloom in its limestone grasslands.

In spring, visitors can view orchids up close at the Orchideeëntuin Gerendal. The garden is located at Valkenburgerweg 1 in Schin op Geul. Those interested in plants and wildlife can also consider a seasonal excursion in the Gerendal: a forester accompanies the approximately two-and-a-half-hour hike, where visitors can discover flowering plants and active wildlife. Check the current dates for this seasonal excursion in advance.

For cyclists, the Keutenberg is known for its 23 percent gradient. This offers a different perspective on the landscape than exploring on foot: here, a specific feature of the route takes centre stage, while the hikes are described in terms of distances, valley landscapes and named nature areas.

Buildings and history

Kasteel Genhoes was built from Limburg marl and brick. The complex includes a corner tower, moats with an arched bridge and a long driveway. The castle is a Rijksmonument, a listed national heritage site; its robust tower and arched bridge are also among its notable features. The building brings together details that can each be appreciated individually: materials, tower, moats and the approach via the driveway.

The Kluis houses a small museum with objects belonging to Johannus Henricus Weerts, who lived there from 1860 to 1889. The Kluis regularly opens to visitors. For planning purposes, check when a visit is possible. The Sint-Mauritiuskerk is considered one of the oldest churches in Limburg. Its original Romanesque nave may date back to the 11th century. The church stands partly on a church mound with a marl retaining wall and is surrounded by a cemetery.

You can shape your stay around the focus you prefer: choose one of the three hiking distances, explore limestone landscapes and orchids, or discover the architectural history of Kasteel Genhoes, the Kluis and the Sint-Mauritiuskerk.
