A network of passages stretching about 25 kilometres makes the Geulhemmergroeve a distinctive feature of a stay in Berg En Terblijt. Its highlights include rock dwellings, a historic chapel dating from the French Revolution and the Oranjegalerie, with medallions of the House of Orange. Together, these places offer an insight into cave, architectural and cultural history.
Marl, architecture and local history
The rock dwellings were created by quarrying marl. A wall with a window and door was built in front of the excavated cave space—a striking combination of rock and constructed façade. The chapel and the Oranjegalerie add their own historical touches to the Geulhemmergroeve.
Kasteel Geulzicht offers another perspective on the area's architectural history. It is located on the Geulhemmerberg in the hamlet of Geulhem near Berg, which is now part of the Dutch municipality of Valkenburg aan de Geul. The castle is a national monument (Rijksmonument) and part of Buitengoed Geul & Maas. It was built in 1918 in English Neo-Gothic style, to a design by Maastricht-born architect Henri Reek and commissioned by P.G. Zuyderhoudt.
The Church of H.H. Monulphus en Gondulphus also features classic Neo-Gothic design, including pointed arches. It has 13 stained-glass windows as well as two transept windows designed by Hub Levigne between 1942 and 1950. The front façade of the Baarhäuschen is also clearly visible from the street at Monulphusplein.
Hiking between landscapes and vineyards
The “Rondom Berg” hiking route follows trail junctions through the countryside around both villages, linking the landscape with cultural history. It starts on Valkenburgerstraat or at Monulphusplein in Berg En Terblijt. As route details may change, check the latest information before setting out.
The Route des Vins Berg en Terblijt – Houthem St. Gerlach has a different focus: it passes several vineyards and an orchard. Houthem St. Gerlach railway station, at Van Caldenborghsweg 4, is associated with the route. The “Rondom Berg” route focuses on landscapes and cultural history, while the Route des Vins puts vineyards and an orchard centre stage.
Discover art and wine
Giardino presents works by sculptors and painters in both a gallery and a sculpture garden in Berg En Terblijt. Visitors are welcomed in person and receive expert advice on selecting and displaying art. This combines viewing the works with a personal introduction to questions surrounding art.
Four grape varieties grow at Wijngoed Lenoire: Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Noir. The selection may change as production changes. A Burgundy-style tour can also be booked on request. In dry weather, three wines are tasted in the vineyard and a few snacks are served. Check the tour's availability before your trip.
Practical information for your visit
There is a car park, P1, for Groeve Blom. From the N590, reach it via Kleine Heideweg; it is on the left after 30 metres. Visitor information about access may change, so check the details before you set off.
