In Limbricht, the church, castle and forest offer very different ways to shape your stay: from murals dating to around 1300 to a hiking route through Limbrichterbos. There are also cultural tours, audio tours and activities at Kasteel Limbricht. To plan your visit, consider the specific themes and route lengths without treating a hike, cycling route and sightseeing visit as interchangeable.

Murals and Romanesque features

Oude Salviuskerk is a good starting point for a cultural history visit. The church contains murals dating from around 1300, considered the oldest ever found in a Dutch village church. They can still be viewed today. The architecture also rewards a closer look: the choir features Romanesque elements, including round windows and rounded-arch decorations below the eaves.

The church also serves as a venue for concerts, guided tours and exhibitions. It is part of the “Route vol Verwondering Noord-lus.” At designated stops along the route, visitors can use QR codes on signs on the façades to access 360-degree tours and/or audio tours on their own smartphones. This lets you combine a church visit with a digital exploration, provided one of these stops is on your route.

Kasteel Limbricht: castle grounds and guided tours

Kasteel Limbricht is an early medieval motte castle surrounded by a moat. A cultural tour takes visitors through the underground vaulted cellar of the main castle, dating from the 11th century; the tour also includes a visit to a small museum in the dungeon complex. The cellar’s date and the castle’s classification describe different aspects of the site.

The motte is also home to a bronze statue of Entgen Luijten. Her life is also the subject of the “De Heks van Limbricht” cycling route, which shares information through audio clips. Another audio tour, “Heden ik, morgen gij – verhalen van Limbricht,” starts at Kasteel Limbricht. The “Stolpersteine Limbricht, Grevenbicht, Obbicht en Einighausen” audio tour, on the other hand, starts at Burgemeester Coonenplein in Limbricht and passes all the Stolpersteine. Check the digital availability of the audio tours before your trip.

Hiking, cycling and Limbrichterbos

There are routes of different lengths for getting outdoors. Kasteel Limbricht offers a 9.5-kilometre hiking route that passes through Limbrichterbos and ends in the castle courtyard. The 50.0-kilometre “Route vol Verwondering Zuid-Lus” cycling route also starts and ends at Kasteel Limbricht. The distances provide a concrete starting point for comparing the hike and the cycling route, but do not indicate walking or cycling times. Check the route details before setting out on the hike; they may also change for the cycling route.

Limbrichterbos is a beech forest crossed by two streams. If you choose a quiet time of day, you can hear woodpeckers tapping or drumming throughout the forest. The quiet conditions are part of the nature experience: for this forest walk, the timing matters just as much as the route.

Scooter tour and regional beer tasting

Scooter tours can be booked from Kasteel Limbricht. They take you through the estate and surrounding area, returning to the castle terrace, where coffee or tea is served. It is best to check the available options in advance for dates and booking details.

For a culinary activity, Kasteel Limbricht offers a beer tasting featuring regional beers and exotic fruit beers. Kasteelbrood and several tapenades are served alongside. Booking details may change here too. This means a stay in Limbricht offers clearly distinct options: church art and architecture, castle tours and audio tours, forest and outdoor activities, or a tasting.
