The “Van stadspark naar stadspark” hiking route runs through urban areas, parks and green spaces in the municipality of Sittard-Geleen. Along the way, these different sides of the municipality come together. Numerous forests, parks and urban gardens are also used for hiking. Further afield are the extensive floodplains of the Meuse, with Limburg villages featuring historic sights nestled between them.

On Foot Between Parks and History

“Rondje Oud-Geleen” is a specific circuit for discovering local history. The 8.6-kilometre hiking route follows the hiking junction network and passes listed buildings. It was announced on 17 July 2026; check its current availability before your trip.

The hiking route near the Pater Karel Chapel also connects with a notable place: “Van stadspark naar stadspark” passes the chapel in Munstergeleen. The hiking route near the chapel is approximately nine kilometres long and is signposted mostly with yellow posts. These provide two route descriptions of different lengths for orientation, without confusing the approximate length of one with the exact distance of the other.

The chapel’s history includes its origins: in 1954, a barn near Father Karel’s birthplace on the Geleenbeek was converted into a chapel. There is also a museum and a shop selling religious items at the site. If you are interested in the history of the place, you can combine this stop with the hiking route that passes the chapel.

Art, Cultural Heritage and Special Places

At Museum Het Nieuwe Domein, art, cultural heritage and contemporary life come together. Exhibitions, programmes and projects share stories from the city and region. The building also tells of a previous use: it was built in 1863 as a school with a teacher’s residence. The museum therefore showcases both today’s cultural themes and the building’s original purpose.

In Limbricht, a guided tour of Kasteel Limbricht takes visitors into an underground vaulted cellar in the main castle, dating from the 11th century. The tour also includes a visit to a small museum in the castle dungeon. Old Salvius Church, meanwhile, hosts concerts, guided tours and exhibitions. The church is part of the “Route vol Verwondering Noord-lus”; this places its cultural programme within a broader thematic context, without implying a set visiting programme.

Kasteelpark Born offers a different kind of outing: the wildlife park is located in the gardens of the former Kasteel Born. A large playground is next to the terrace. The site combines the wildlife park with its own play area, giving it a different character from the historic and cultural stops.

Cycling Routes with Digital Discoveries

The Route vol Verwondering comprises three cycling routes through the Zuid-Limburgse Grensmaasvallei, the Selfkant (D) and Maaseik (B). It follows the cycling junction network. Along the route, visitors can access a 360-degree tour and/or an audio tour on their own smartphone at more than 36 locations. The three cycling routes and digital offerings give the tour different ways to explore: you can follow the route via the junction network and access additional content on your smartphone at the locations mentioned.

In Grevenbicht, the ’t Vaerke foot and bicycle ferry makes cross-border hiking and cycling tours possible. It operates between cycling junction 19 in the Netherlands and junction 46 in Belgium. Check the ferry’s current timetable before your trip. This lets you plan around the stated connection without assuming a particular service is operating.

Wine, Events and Getting Your Bearings

Wine is also among the discoveries to be made around Sittard. The Route des Vins Sittard showcases the wine offerings of Sittard-Geleen along a hiking route, including a tasting of a local wine at Wijngaard Fort Sanderbout. The St. Joep Market is one of the major events in Sittard-Geleen. If you would like to plan your visit around it, check the event dates and programme before your trip.

For tourist information, Visit Zuid-Limburg Experience Sittard-Geleen offers guidance on Sittard-Geleen and its surroundings through five themes. This thematic way of exploring the municipality and its wider surroundings complements the specific routes, cultural sites and events.
