A 16.8-kilometre hiking route, Roman history and distinctive architectural forms give Heel several reasons to visit. If you enjoy spending time outdoors, the Grindgaten Route and De Tuspeel offer different landscape experiences. Culturally, the timeline spans from the Roman Vicus Catualium to medieval and Baroque details. Diving at Boschmolenplas adds another activity in its own right.
Hiking and landscapes around Heel
The Grindgaten Route passes through the landscape around Heel and is 16.8 kilometres long. It starts and ends at the Cultureel Centrum Don Bosco in Heel, giving the walk a clear starting and finishing point. Along the route, information boards explain how the Maasplassen formed, linking the walk with an insight into the development of the regional lake landscape.
De Tuspeel lies north of Heel. This 28-hectare raised bog is surrounded by deciduous and coniferous forest. Several walking trails pass through the area. The Grindgaten Route offers a set distance, while De Tuspeel is all about the raised-bog landscape and the paths through it. Check current access arrangements before visiting.
The Maasplassen form a connected network of large and small lakes created by gravel extraction. A large part of the network lies in the municipality of Maasgouw, and the lakes cover more than 3,000 hectares in total. This regional scale helps put the subject of the information boards along the Grindgaten Route into context: they explain the formation of an extensive lake area, not just a single route.
Roman history and architecture
From around AD 40 to the 4th century AD, Heel was home to the Vicus Catualium. This lively Roman roadside settlement stood on an important route between Tongeren and Nijmegen. This early history of the town contrasts with the later architectural and artistic forms that are also part of Heel.
Heel’s church tower dates from the 12th century and is partly built from Maas river pebbles. St. Stephanuskerk has two Baroque altar retables from the 18th century, as well as a Romanesque baptismal font from the 12th century. The building brings together two distinct periods: the Romanesque design of the baptismal font and the much later altar retables.
The Mariakapel in Heel is also defined by specific architectural features: it has a five-sided roof and angled buttresses. In the late-medieval Kasteel van Heel, the southern section consists of a U-shaped main building with a wing attached on the southeast side. These architectural forms provide a cultural focus alongside hiking, without needing to be linked to a particular route.
