Thorn combines a striking white cityscape with a history dating back to the 10th century. Around 975, the settlement was founded as a Benedictine nunnery. Later, French taxation based on the size of windows and doors led to many façades being whitewashed. This created the distinctive white appearance that still defines Thorn today.

From monastery to secular convent

From the 12th century onward, Thorn developed into a secular convent. At its head was an abbess, supported by a chapter of up to 20 high-born ladies. This development gave the town’s history a distinctive turn: the Benedictine nunnery became a secular community with its own leadership. The Thorn Museum displays objects relating to the history of the little white town and the former noble convent. In addition, a historical exhibition or an exhibition about artists connected with Thorn is held twice a year.

Thorn’s two harmonies are also part of the town’s cultural life. They perform regularly both in Thorn and elsewhere. The traditional Joint Concert of Thorn’s Harmonies takes place on Ascension Day. If this concert is relevant to your trip, check the specific dates before making your plans.

Walking tours with different focuses

There are two differently described options for a walking tour. The interactive city walk is 2 kilometres long and takes about 30 minutes. Additional information in text and images is available at 21 stops. The 1.6-kilometre city tour passes 21 monuments and historic buildings. The routes therefore have different focuses: one lists stops with additional information, while the other passes historic buildings and monuments.

If you prefer to explore the town on your own, you can take the Thorn audio tour on your own smartphone at any time. You can combine it with the walking routes according to your interests, without committing to a guided tour.

Water and nature around Thorn

Thorn borders Lake De Grote Hegge, where you can swim and dive. A cycling bridge also crosses the nature area at De Grote Hegge. The Meggelveld near Thorn offers a different landscape: it consists of water and an alder carr, where black alders grow in wet soil. It is also one of the largest grey heron colonies in the Netherlands.

The Meggelveld is accessible via the Panheeldersteeg and several cattle gates. You can roam freely along the paths created by Galloway cattle and Konik horses. Visitor conditions may change; check them before your visit. The De Koningssteen nature reserve is also located in the area around Thorn, outside the town. It is freely accessible year-round between sunrise and sunset, and is grazed by Galloway cattle and Polish Konik horses. It is also advisable to check visitor conditions in advance here.

Plan cycling routes and travel

Two routes with different focuses are options for a longer cycle ride. The 37-kilometre Maasplassen RivierPark Maasvallei cycling route passes through the southern Maasplassen and, among other places, the little white town of Thorn. The 56-kilometre Asparagus Cycling Route through Dutch and Flemish Limburg starts at De Grote Hegge on Waterstraat in Thorn. The stated distances and different routes help you consider them as separate options.

Thorn can be reached by bus from the direction of Weert or Roermond. As timetables may change, check the connection for your planned travel day. When looking for a hotel in Thorn, you might first consider whether you want to focus your trip on the history of the convent and walking tours, the lake and nature reserves, or one of the longer cycling routes.
