South of Grathem is the restored Grathemermolen watermill, which is connected to the Uffelse Beek. It is open every Saturday from 11:00 am to 4:30 pm; check the current opening hours before you arrive. The mill gives your stay a specific time anchor: if you want to visit, plan your visit for a Saturday.
Castle and garden spaces
Kasteel Groot Buggenum is a monumental castle in Grathem. Professor Helmut Hentrich gave the building its present appearance around 1971. The castle has a park with various garden spaces designed by German garden architect Roland Weber. Here, you can take in both architectural history and designed garden spaces in one place. Important for planning: the castle and gardens are not freely accessible and can only be visited as part of a guided tour. Check the booking conditions in advance, as they may change.
Huis ten Hove is also part of the town’s protected heritage: the complex of a historic country estate is protected by the state. Together with the castle, it shows that Grathem’s cultural heritage is not limited to a single site. The two places represent different aspects of historic architecture and landscape history.
Churches and historical traces
The St Severinuskerk combines a notable age with a specific material detail: its tower is made of marlstone and dates from the 13th century, possibly even the 12th century. The church is protected by the state as a Rijksmonument. Its cemetery also preserves seven grave crosses dating from 1628 to 1757. The tower, protected status and grave crosses thus offer different ways to explore Grathem’s religious and historical heritage.
Another protected historic country estate adds to this picture, while the two chapels offer their own testimony to local religious history. The Heilig Hart Kapel is an example of devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. According to its inscription, it was built in 1922. The Lourdes (Maria)kapel, in turn, was built shortly before the Second World War: Angelina Cleutjens-Cuypers’s children built it in accordance with her last wish. These are different historical connections—in one chapel, the religious dedication takes centre stage; in the other, it is the story of its origins.
On foot and by bike
The Dorpswandeling Grathem follows junctions 70–71–76–77–93–91–75–74–73–72–71–70. If you would rather plan a cycling trip, there are two named options with different details: “Fietsen met volksverhalen in Leudal Zuid” is 42 kilometres long and starts at Geraats Horeca, Markt 5 in Grathem. The “Molen fietstocht Leudal Zuid” passes through Grathem. Check route details before setting out, as they may be updated.
The landscape also offers its own themes for a stay: small woodland plots along the Uffelsebeek near Grathem are managed by Natuurmonumenten. There is also a birdwatching hide for kingfishers on a walking route near Grathem.
When planning, you can weigh cultural stops against outdoor activities: the mill has specified Saturday opening hours, a castle visit requires a guided tour, and the available route details vary between cycling trips. Choose the length of your stay and your daily plans according to the places you actually want to visit, and verify any date- or route-dependent information in advance.
