The municipality of Leudal is bordered to the east by the Maasplassen. The protected Leudal Natura 2000 nature reserve is a characteristic stream valley landscape in Midden-Limburg: deeply incised streams and old meanders shape the scenery, along with damp deciduous forests and flower-rich grasslands. This landscape is home to kingfishers, grey wagtails, badgers and beavers, as well as bitterlings, weatherfish and European bullheads.

Discover Stream Valleys and Trails

Another nature attraction is the newly created Bomenbos Leudal. Around 6,000 square metres are home to 90 different trees, divided into ten categories. As a new planting, the woodland can continue to develop over time. If you would like to explore the area on foot, you can use the numbered walking junctions to put together your own routes. There are also several signposted walking trails around Leudal’s 16 village centres.

For a specific outing, routes of different lengths are available as a guide: the “Bekenroute door het Leudal” is 12.1 kilometres long and starts at Raadhuisplein or Roggelseweg in Haelen. The “WWW-wandelroute”, also known as the “Water Wandel Wereld” route, passes through Leudal and is about 15 kilometres long. This makes the WWW route longer than the Bekenroute. Check the route and its availability before setting out; you should also double-check route details and starting points.

“De geheime sleutels van het Leudal” is also a smartphone treasure hunt: solve puzzles and uncover secrets on site using clues. The activity is aimed at children aged around six to twelve and their families. Confirm availability before planning the activity.

Cultural History at Various Sites

The Leudalmuseum divides its exhibits into ten thematic groups: prehistory, the Romans, crafts, PLEM/electricity, shooting guilds, religion, household life, the Second World War and warfare, and clothing. The display may be revised. Another way to engage with the history of remembrance is the Monument van Verdraagzaamheid. It commemorates the war years from 1940 to 1945 and the more than 800 military personnel from eleven nations who lost their lives in the Leudal area. The monument was unveiled on 8 March 2001.

An international memorial service is held there every year on the Thursday closest to 16 November. It is organised by Stichting Herdenkingsmonument Militairen together with the municipality of Leudal. If you would like to attend, check the exact date in advance.

St. Elisabethmolen is a tourist attraction in the municipality of Leudal. It was a watermill on the Leubeek and belonged to Klooster Sint-Elisabethsdal. In 2014, the part below the waterline was partially replaced; the mill also received a new mill wheel and a generator to produce green electricity. Today, the mill is protected by a roof. Check access arrangements before visiting.

The architectural history of the castles also reflects different periods. Kasteel Aldenghoor in Haelen is a medieval castle. The 17th-century main building has two wings with hipped roofs. At the inside corner stands a round black tower made of brick and marl, dating from the 15th or 16th century. Kasteel Horn has an oval castle wall dating mostly from the 15th and 16th centuries, with some surviving remains from the 14th century. The well-preserved ancestral castle of the Lords of Horn is surrounded by an attractive park with walking paths.

Three cycling routes themed around “Rijke Roomse Leven” pass through Leudal and bring the municipality’s Catholic heritage to life. Check the routes’ current availability before setting out.

Practical Information

At Bezoekerscentrum Leudal, you can get walking and cycling routes, tips about the area and information about Leudal’s special features. The offer may change, so check before your visit. The car park next to the visitor centre at Roggelseweg 58 in Haelen has a universal charging station for electric cars. You should confirm this service in advance as well. The centre lends out two all-terrain wheelchairs so that visitors with limited mobility can also experience nature in Leudal. Ask about current availability and reservation conditions.
