Blauwestad lies in a nearly 2,000-hectare nature area that includes the Oldambtmeer and existing nature reserves. As part of the Blauwestad project, a new lake of more than 800 hectares was created. The lake and the larger nature area provide two different scales for getting your bearings: activities on the water differ from those on the trails or at the art sites.
Water and Landscape
At the Oldambtmeer, DEK Blauwestad offers kayak hire. If you plan to use it, check the latest operating information before your trip. The Oldambtmeer and the surrounding waterways are also considered attractive fishing waters; check local regulations before fishing. Water-based interests therefore also differ geographically: kayak hire is associated with the lake, while the fishing waters also include the surrounding waterways.
Trails and Connections
Reiderwolde is a 200-hectare nature area beside the Oldambtmeer. The area has cycling, walking and horse-riding trails, offering three ways to get around on the paths. The Pieter Smitbrug serves a different purpose: it directly connects Winschoten with Blauwestad and is intended for cyclists and pedestrians. The bridge is almost 800 metres long. The permanent marathon routes start at the blue viewing platform in the Havenkwartier on Redersplein in Blauwestad.
The Pontje van Henk connects Reiderwolde with the De Tjamme nature area near Beerta. Check ferry operations before your trip, before making firm plans to use this connection. The named endpoints help with navigation: the bridge connects Winschoten with Blauwestad, while the Pontje connects Reiderwolde with De Tjamme near Beerta.
Land Art and Event Venues
The Triadeem near Strand Zuid is a play and activity area made of boulders and also a landscape artwork by Derk den Boer. The Wilgenborg is a living land art installation on the edge of the Oldambtmeer and is known as the “green cathedral.” The artistic features differ: the Triadeem explicitly includes a play function, while the Wilgenborg is classified as a living artwork.
The Wilgenborg can host larger and smaller events, theatre, storytelling and music. Elfenbank is a place to spend time that occasionally serves as an event venue. The theatre in Reiderwolde can be used for performances, excursions and lessons; arrangements must be made in advance. The event site at Strand Zuid on the southern side of the Oldambtmeer is suitable for events such as concerts and temporary campsites. If you are planning around an event, check the specific dates.
