Voorst offers different ways to enjoy a stay: historic buildings and traces of village history, as well as routes through forests, stream valleys and the surrounding countryside. When planning your visit, consider whether you would prefer to focus on cultural history or on exploring the area. The routes described vary in length and character, making it easier to choose the right one without treating them as a single combined tour.

Walking and cycling: different routes through Voorst

The Beekweidenpad is a 16-kilometre circular walking route through forests, a stream valley, raised fields and country estates in the countryside around Voorst. Red Klomp symbols mark the route in both directions. The information board for the Beekweidenpad is at the Dorpshuis in Voorst; there is another starting point at Voorst-Empe railway station. As route details may change, check the latest route information before setting off.

The Monumentaal rondje Voorst offers a different focus: it allows visitors to experience the village, shaped by its cultural history, and the varied landscape around it.

For cycling, the Beekzichter Fietsroute starts at the Tolhuisje, Rijksstraatweg 34 in Voorst. At 22 points along the route, it provides background information on the history and landscape of the Beekzicht estate and its farms. This offers a different perspective from the signposted circular walking route: here, the focus is on historical and landscape-related information about the estate.

Cultural history at churches, windmills and burial mounds

At Appense Veld, you can visit six burial mounds dating from the Neolithic and Bronze Age. The Dorpskerk Voorst also offers two specific historical points of interest: it is mentioned as early as 893, while its church tower dates from the 12th century. The church is regularly rented out for suitable uses. If you have a particular use in mind, check current availability.

De Adelaar is a Rijksmonument (national heritage site) and remains in its original condition. Parts of the building are thought to date from the 16th century, making it one of the oldest stone buildings in the municipality of Voorst. Molen De Zwaan, meanwhile, is an octagonal windmill with a gallery, dating from 1740.

Ambachtelijke bakkerij Bril is also part of the historic village landscape: it is housed in a 200-year-old listed building and bakes using traditional methods every day. Business details may change; check the latest information before planning a visit.

The IJssel and its landscape

The landscape can also be read through its landforms. The village of Voorst lies on an old levee of the IJssel. In the Voorsterklei, roads and waterways bear witness to the IJssel’s former, varied river courses.

The Beekzicht estate covers 500 hectares from Appense Veld to the IJssel. Together with the routes and historic sites described, this expansive area offers another perspective on the landscape. You can therefore choose different focuses for your stay: individual buildings and traces of the past, a designated circular walking route, or background information along a cycling route.
