Terwolde offers several distinct ways to explore: walking trails with clearly named starting points, church and mill history, and bookable cider tastings that offer insight into the production process. To choose between the options, it is worth first distinguishing between the similarly named walking trails. Building history and regional production offer further points of interest in their own right.

Walking and Cycling

The Tuylermarkerpad is 11 km long and starts at the Cosmas-en-Damianus Church, Molenweg 2 in Terwolde. A blue clog symbol marks the trail in both directions; you can walk it clockwise or counterclockwise. The Woldermarkerpad also starts at the Cosmas-en-Damianus Church, on Molenweg. It is an approximately 7 km circular walking trail, marked in both directions with a red clog symbol, and can also be walked clockwise or counterclockwise. The Woldermarkerpad is therefore the shorter option, explicitly described as a circular trail; at 11 km, the Tuylermarkerpad offers the longer route. As markings may change when trails are rerouted, check the latest route information before setting out.

The Woldermarkerpad and the Avervoorderpad pass through the countryside around De Vecht, Teuge and Terwolde. Another option is the “Fietsen langs IJsselhoeven en Spiekers” cycling route. It starts at the Cosmas-en-Damianus Church and follows a general route via the Terwoldse Bandijk to the northern part of Nijbroek. The return route goes through the village of Nijbroek and De Vecht to the church. This route is laid out differently from the two walking trails: Nijbroek and De Vecht are explicitly named as stops along the described cycling route.

Churches, Estates and Local History

A small church dedicated to Saints Cosmas and Damian already stood at the site of the Dorpskerk Terwolde in the 13th century. It was rebuilt into its present form around 1400 and in 1540. The church has murals by Ewolt van Delft dating from around 1540. The mural of Saint Cunera is described as unique to the region. This site thus brings together early church history, later phases of rebuilding and the surviving murals.

Landgoed Matanze is a historic estate dating from the 17th century. Its named features include the main building, a coach house, a tea house, monumental greenhouses and a former servants’ house. Landgoed Matanze and the garden house are Rijksmonumenten, meaning state-protected monuments in the Netherlands. Those interested in historic estates will find a different kind of heritage here than at the church: the focus is on several buildings and their different former functions rather than on church murals.

The history of Gemaal Terwolde also forms part of the local story: it began in 1913 with the commission to build a steam pumping station on the Bandijk in Terwolde. The mr. A.C. baron Van der Feltzgemaal has been a municipal monument for several years. The information thus refers both to the pumping station’s beginnings and to its later monument status.

Mill and Cider

The De Ooievaar corn mill was rebuilt after fires in 1893, 1973 and 2015, and is once again fully operational. Guided tours led by a miller are available. Check current visiting arrangements before your visit. Baking mixes are sold in the Molenwinkel; the varieties may vary depending on the season. The mill visit and the shop offer different points of interest: mill tours focus on how the mill operates, while the Molenwinkel features seasonally changing baking mixes.

The IESSEL cider tasting room is right on the IJssel, at Bandijk 25, 7396 NB Terwolde. IESSEL Cider offers bookable tastings. They include a visit to the cider press, an explanation of the cider-making process and the chance to sample several ciders. This makes it possible to focus on cider production and tasting; the riverside address also helps you locate the tasting room in Terwolde.
