A medieval moated castle, trails through river floodplains, and traces of former country estates give Doorwerth a range of distinctive features. To plan your stay, you can first decide whether cultural history, hiking, or cycling will shape your days.

Moated Castle and Architectural History

Kasteel Doorwerth is a medieval moated castle with a courtyard and a large outer bailey. It lies between the Neder-Rijn and the southern Veluwe. In the autumn of 1944, the castle was left in ruins during the Battle of Arnhem; it was subsequently fully restored over a period of 37 years. The site therefore combines a medieval structure with a much more recent history of reconstruction.

Watertoren Doorwerth also offers a tangible connection to architectural history: the water tower is a Rijksmonument dating from 1938, designed by Ir. Th.K.J. Koch in the Amsterdam School style. The Apothekersmuseum Kisters in Doorwerth was founded by pharmacist couple Kisters-Ascherman and contains a distinctive collection of pharmacy items.

Another historical highlight is Hunneschans de Duno, a medieval archaeological ringwork monument. The oval earthwork contains remains of palisades and postholes from a building. It probably served as a fortified site on the push moraine. The different sites are well suited to a cultural itinerary that distinguishes between architecture and archaeological traces.

Hiking Trails through Floodplains and across the Push Moraine

The Dorenweertsepad passes through the Neder-Rijn floodplains, crosses the push moraine with its old country estates and hillside forests, and loops around Kasteel Doorwerth. The Hevearoute focuses on different historical landmarks: it passes the former site of the Duno manor house and the Hunnenschans. The routes described can therefore be distinguished primarily by their landscapes or their historical destinations. Trail conditions and access may change; check them before planning your visit.

Landgoed Duno lies south of Doorwerth on the push moraine and offers views of the Neder-Rijn and its floodplains. The former site of the manor house is still visible there. The old Azalealaan, along with the remains of the tea house and entrance gate, also recalls the former estate; some traces may be subtle on site. At the foot of the push moraine, numerous streams and ponds provide a habitat for toads, frogs, smooth newts, and kingfishers.

Cycling, Gardens, and Visitor Information

The Doorwerth bicycle-node route is 32.9 kilometers long and follows the bicycle junction network around Kasteel Doorwerth. There is free parking at Fonteinallee 4, near the route’s starting point. Routes and parking rules may change. A separate mountain bike route has also been created on Landgoed Duno; check the current signage on site.

De Tuinen van MergenMetz comprises a vegetable garden, an edible ornamental garden, a herb garden, a dye garden, an orchard, and a wooded area with pigs. Workshops, dinners, and group cooking sessions are offered there. Dates and booking details may change; check the latest information if you are planning one of these activities.

Kasteel Doorwerth is open Tuesday through Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; opening hours may change. Guided tours of the castle are offered on the first and third Thursday of each month. Other tours go through or around the castle, through the vegetable garden, or to the beekeeping area. Dates and booking options may change, so it is worth checking in advance.

For visitors using a wheelchair, rollator, or mobility scooter, the vegetable garden and the paths around Kasteel Doorwerth are accessible free of charge. This information applies specifically to these areas; conditions on site may change. Check before your visit.
