Renkum’s brook valley stretches from the Veluwe to the floodplains of the Rhine. Changes in elevation, streams and wet meadows shape this natural area. At the same time, cultural and historical features are part of its new natural landscape, bringing the area’s industrial heritage to life. In the broader geographical setting, Renkum lies on the southern edge of the Veluwe, between forests and the Neder-Rijn.

Brook Valley, Parkland and Local History

One notable site in Renkum’s brook valley is the Papiermakersmonument on the Molenbeek. It stands near the junction of Waterweg, Hartenseweg and Beukenlaan. In Oosterbeek, Park Hartenstein reveals another aspect of the landscape: this 11-hectare national monument was laid out as a landscaped park around Huize Hartenstein in the English landscape style of the time. A wide variety of distinctive native and foreign trees define the park; woodpeckers, bullfinches, nightingales, treecreepers and siskins use them as nesting and feeding sites. Several ANWB cycling and walking routes pass through the park.

Airborne History and Art

The permanent exhibition at the Airborne Museum Hartenstein presents the Battle of Arnhem day by day. At the Airborne Experience, visitors can follow in the footsteps of a British paratrooper and experience the battle. You can complement a museum visit with an impressive guided activity. More than 1,750 Allied service personnel are buried at the Airborne Begraafplaats, the British War Cemetery in Oosterbeek. It features a Cross of Sacrifice with a bronze sword and a memorial stone inscribed “THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE”.

A recurring event also links Airborne history with village life: the Airborne Wandeltocht takes place every year on the first Saturday in September. It begins with an official parade and a minute of silence. After returning to Oosterbeek, visitors can enjoy music in the streets and a get-together at Sportpark Hartenstein and other locations in the village. If you plan to attend, check the dates before your visit.

Together, Oosterbeek, Renkum and Wolfheze make up the oldest artists’ colony in the Netherlands. Museum Veluwezoom presents changing exhibitions on the Oosterbeek School, Pictura Veluvensis and Euro Art. There is also a permanent outdoor exhibition of paintings by the Renkumse Schilders in and around the centre of Renkum. The Oude Kerk Oosterbeek offers year-round guided tours on request for individual visitors as well as cycling and walking groups. You can also listen there to a film and an animated film with an English soundtrack about the church’s history.

Walking Routes of Different Lengths

For a shorter walk, the 4.4-kilometre Rondje Beekdal loops through the forests of Renkum’s brook valley. The 17-kilometre Molenbeeksepad is a klompenpad (clog trail) through the brook valley. The Hartensepad runs around Renkum and is 14 kilometres long; shorter alternatives of 6 or 9 kilometres are also available. For planning, options range from the 4.4-kilometre loop to the 17-kilometre Molenbeeksepad; the Hartensepad also has shorter versions of 6 or 9 kilometres.

Family walks also differ in length and target audience: “De Juffer van Grunsvoort” is a 7-kilometre podcast walk for the whole family. The Kabouterpad is 1 kilometre long and designed for children aged 3 to 6; the 2.5-kilometre Droombomenpad is aimed at slightly older children. The visitor centre at Renkum’s brook valley and the neighbouring Boscafé de Beken serve as the starting and finishing points for walks you can take independently or with a nature guide.

Mills and Castle Visits

The Renkumse Molen has a long building history: it was built as a post mill in 1858, raised to a gallery-style Dutch windmill in 1911, badly damaged in 1944 during Operation Market Garden, and restored in 2013. It is open on Saturdays from 10:00 to 16:00; check the opening hours again before your visit. The shop beneath the mill sells various types of flour and regional products.

Landgoed Quadenoord covers 230 hectares and lies at the upper end of Renkum’s brook valley. The grounds are used by walkers, cyclists and horse riders. Rondje Paradijs passes the estate’s sculpture exhibition and restored watermill. The watermill is provisionally open to the public once a month, as well as on National Mill Days, Heritage Days and Gelderse Molendag; check the opening days before visiting. Another historic stop is Kasteel Doorwerth, a medieval moated castle in the Rhine floodplains, with a complete moat and outer bailey. You can visit the castle independently or with a guide; activities are also available.
