The Vragenderveen, a living raised bog covering 110 hectares, reveals a distinctive side of Oost Gelre’s landscape. You can walk through the freely accessible outer area or join a guided tour of the bog. Walking options and guided tours may vary; check what is available before your visit.

Bog and landscape

At the Vragenderveen visitor centre, photographs and maps explain the bog, how it formed and the measures taken to preserve it. The common and rare birds, butterflies and plants found there are also introduced. This gives you an insight not only into the habitat itself, but also its biodiversity and the work involved in preserving it.

The bog lies within a varied landscape of fields, meadows, streams, small patches of woodland, villages and scattered farmsteads. Each of these different landscape features gives Oost Gelre its own character. At Natuurpark de Leemputten, you can go pedal boating or stroll along a quiet woodland path. Activity availability may vary.

Groenlo: fortress history and routes

In Groenlo, the Nationaal Museum Tachtigjarige Oorlog is housed in a restored 15th-century church. It brings the history of the Eighty Years’ War to life in an engaging, interactive way and from multiple perspectives. The fortress’s history is also visible beyond the museum: sections of the town moat, rampart, ravelin and town wall have been preserved as historic fortifications.

Cycling and walking routes in Groenlo include paths along the fortifications, through a park landscape with hedges and groups of trees, along church paths and through surrounding villages. When walking, you can use the waymarked junction network to choose your own distance. For a set distance, try the 22-kilometre Marveld–Zwillbrock cycling route, which runs from the fortified town of Groenlo to Natuurpark de Leemputten. Route options and conditions may change; check the current route before setting out.

Next to the museum is De Wheme car park, with four charging points for electric cars. The museum has a lift, seating, an accessible toilet and written transcripts of the audio texts for visitors with hearing impairments. Parking, charging and accessibility facilities may change; a quick confirmation before you travel can help with planning.

During the Slag om Grolle, Groenlo becomes a lively open-air museum for three days, with historic markets, music, crafts and theatre. Re-enactments of battles take place twice a day at the Schootsveld during the event. Dates and programme details may vary, so check the specific event dates in advance.

History and regional insights

The Achterhoeks Openluchtmuseum offers a glimpse into the former farming life of the Achterhoek and shows how farmers once lived and worked. Its audio tour covers old buildings, machinery, crafts and local legends. It is available in Dutch, German and Achterhoeks; tour formats may change.

Traces of the past have also been found on the grounds of Erve Kots, including a Frankish burial ground and a post-built farmstead with a ditch. These finds offer another glimpse into the region’s history.

At Kaasboerderij Weenink, visitors can watch cheese being made and sample homemade and regional products. If this experience is important to your visit, confirm availability in advance. Brouwersnös offers another tasting opportunity: its 2026 visitor information listed a tasting board with four beers. The selection may change.
