Opheusden offers different insights into the landscape and history of the Betuwe: at De Spees, bodies of water and a Roman watchtower shape the scenery, while routes lead through floodplains and tree nursery plots. Regional tree cultivation and historic memorial sites are also among the topics you can take into account when planning your stay.

Floodplain Landscape and Roman Times at De Spees

De Spees is a floodplain on the south side of the Nederrijn. The large bodies of water were created by extracting gravel and clay for nearby brickworks and provide a habitat for many waterbirds. Walking is possible there in every season, provided the water level is not too high. Check this condition when planning, as it may be more important for access than the time of year.

The visible De Spees fortification is a Rijksmonument and part of the extension of the Grebbelinie. On the side inside the dike stands a replica of a Roman watchtower from the 2nd century. You can climb the tower, which offers views across the Rhine to the Grebbeberg and Rhenen. De Spees thus brings together two distinct historical references: the fortification and the Roman interpretation represented by the watchtower.

Cycling Routes and Paths Through the Betuwe

There are routes of varying lengths and themes to choose from for cycling. The Doorbraakkolkenroute Neder-Betuwe is 60 kilometres long and can be shortened to 30 or 36 kilometres. The stated alternatives help you factor the route length into your day’s plans; bear in mind that route information is subject to change.

The Monumentenroute Neder-Betuwe is intended for bicycles or classic cars. Its official starting point is in Opheusden at the Laanboomcentrum on Dodewaardsestraat. The Laanboomroute Betuwe passes through landscapes and terraced tree nursery plots. It also includes welcoming dining and leisure options in Neder-Betuwe, Overbetuwe and Buren. Individual businesses may change, so it is worth checking the current options if you would like to stop somewhere along the way.

On foot, the Heuzesepad leads through the varied countryside around Opheusden: along rivers and through floodplains, as well as through a river-ridge landscape where trees have been cultivated for centuries. This lets you experience the historic tree nursery culture as part of the landscape, rather than viewing it only as a subject tied to individual places.

Tree Nursery Culture and Getting Around

The garden of the Laanboomhuis is laid out like a park and includes small tree nursery plots as well as a nature, play and learning area. At the Laanboomhuis, visitors can learn about the craft and the latest ideas and techniques. This makes tree cultivation a tangible part of your stay: you will encounter it in the garden’s design, in the surrounding landscape and along the Heuzesepad.

The Laanboomhuis is near the A15 and Opheusden station on the Arnhem–Tiel railway line. The ferry between Opheusden and Wageningen is a historic link between the Betuwe and the southern edge of the Veluwe. A temporary closure is currently reported; check the latest operating status before planning a crossing.

Local History and Practical Stops

Opheusden’s history stretches back several centuries. An old church register from 1395 mentions a church in “Heusden”. Opheusden’s church was probably rebuilt after being destroyed amid civil unrest at the end of the 15th century. A memorial stone in the church commemorates pastor A. van Herwaarden: he was fatally struck by lightning on 29 July 1855 during an evening service.

More recent local history is also tied to a specific date: Opheusden was liberated by the Belgian Brigade Piron on 18 April 1945. At Veerweg 1 stands the former ferry house with an attached farmhouse. It sits on raised ground, dates mainly from the second half of the 19th century and also features older building elements.

For a break or bicycle service, FietStop at the Veerhuis, Veerweg 1, is a useful point of reference. It offers free car parking, food and drinks, charging facilities for electric bicycles and minor repair services. As the services may change, check before your visit. The routes, floodplain and historic sites mentioned here offer different ways to shape your stay, without having to fit every stop into a single itinerary.
