In Ochten, nature and local history come together in distinct, clearly recognizable themes: walking routes lead through floodplains and over dikes, while monuments and historic farms offer insights into the village’s past. The routes and sights provide specific points of interest along the way.

Hiking between floodplains and dikes

The Uchtapad runs through the Waal floodplains, over dikes and past pools in the outer areas of Ochten. Along the route, an inundation sluice commemorates the May battles of 1940. At the time, parts of the Betuwe were flooded for defense. The route thus brings the landscape together with a specific chapter of regional history.

In wet weather, the section through the Gouveneurspolder and the Ochtense Buitenpolder can be very muddy or flooded. As an alternative, you can walk along the dike crossing beside the Oude Veerweg and the Waalbanddijk. Before setting out, check which option suits the conditions. Rondje Ochten also offers its own way to explore the area on foot: it is one of three signposted circular routes around Ochten.

The Waterroute: Betuwe is 12.5 kilometers long and leads from Ochten over the Waalbanddijk into the floodplains of the Betuwe. Almost five kilometers run through a varied natural area. The TOP Nationaal-Fruitpark Hotel & Spa is listed as the starting point.

Fruit growing at Nationaal Fruitpark Ochten

At Nationaal Fruitpark Ochten, fruit growing is combined with outdoor activities. The park is managed organically. Its barefoot trail by the frog ponds crosses more than 30 different surfaces; there is also a mini-golf course. Fruitpark began in 2010 with the aim of sharing knowledge about fruit growing and fostering visitors’ respect for nature and culture.

Nationaal Fruitpark Ochten and the mini-golf course are open every day of the year from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Since opening hours can change, it is advisable to check shortly before your visit. If you want to combine activities in the park with a hike, you can choose a route to suit your particular interests: Rondje Ochten, the Uchtapad and the Waterroute: Betuwe are separate options, each with its own described route.

Local history and historic architectural styles

The Monument voor het 44e Regiment Infanterie commemorates 19 soldiers from the regiment who fell fighting the occupying forces during the May battles of 1940. Ochten’s village center was also shaped by the war: in September 1944, heavy Allied shelling destroyed large parts of the center. The village center was almost completely rebuilt after the war. The present-day Hervormde Kerk was built in 1951 and opened for use in 1952, after its predecessor had been too badly damaged in the war.

Two 18th-century farms illustrate different architectural styles. At Liniestraat 3 stands a plastered farm with a thatched, clipped-gable roof. The plastered farmhouse at 44 R I-straat 10 has a T-shaped floor plan; its residential building has a thatched hip roof. Comparing the two makes their differences clear: the roof shape is the defining feature of one, while the other also has a T-shaped floor plan and a hip roof on its residential building.

Water is also part of the landscape’s history. Because of its location on the Waal, Ochten has historically faced flooding and threats to its dikes. In 1995, the village had to be evacuated because the Waaldijk was at risk of breaching. This history adds another local dimension to the dikes and floodplains that also shape today’s walking routes.
