Wapenveld brings together several specific themes for trip planning: near Wapenveld, the Paddenpad links the Veluwe with the IJssel Valley; the Zwolse Bos adds its own cycling and forest perspective to the hiking trails. Museums, literary connections and a monument also explore regional history. You can therefore choose between a longer landscape hike, a shorter marked trail, cycling and culture connected with the history of milk and paper.

Hiking Trails Between Forest, Heath and Floodplains

The 13-kilometre Paddenpad links the Veluwe and the IJssel Valley near Wapenveld. Along the way, it passes through forests, over a ridge formed during the Ice Age, and alongside meadows, farms and drainage ditches. The route also crosses floodplains on the edge of Wapenveld and passes the heathlands of Klein Zwitserland. The trail therefore takes you through a variety of landscapes rather than being limited to forests or open areas.

The marked Kloosterpad in the Kloosterbos offers a shorter option: it is 3.5 kilometres long. Vrieze's Erfgoed is the starting point for the signposted Kloosterpad. The grounds have a walking trail with information boards about local history and landscape. Markings and access may change; check local trail conditions before setting out.

At Vrieze's Erfgoed, a hand-operated ferry allows you to cross the Apeldoorns Canal to the Kloosterbos. Check local access conditions before including the crossing in your plans. This gives you several specific features to consider when planning a hike: the length of the Paddenpad, the shorter Kloosterpad and the ferry crossing on the Apeldoorns Canal.

Cycling in the Zwolse Bos

The Zwolse Bos has heathland and several small bodies of water. A paved cycle path runs through the forest and is part of the Veluwe cycling junction network. The forest thus combines nature with a clearly identified cycling option. The Annie-Oosterbroek cycling route offers another perspective: it passes places described in the books of Annie Oosterbroek-Dutschun. The cultural connections therefore differ too: the Zwolse Bos is associated with forest, heathland and small bodies of water, while the cycling route provides a literary connection.

Discover the History of Milk and Paper

The Nederlands Zuivelmuseum displays artefacts from the dairy industry across nine themed areas. Objects relating to Dutch dairy history cover the entire milk chain, from grass to glass. The museum is housed in the former IJsselhoeve Erve IJzerman. As a time capsule from 1898, the farmstead offers a glimpse into life at the time. A visit to the museum therefore combines agricultural exhibits with a historic building.

A bronze statue of a papermaker in Wapenveld recalls another aspect of local industrial history: a century of papermaking. Alongside the history of milk, this brings the area’s craft and economic heritage into focus as a distinct cultural theme.

One local food connection is wholemeal flour, which is the basis for Pannenkoekenmeel and Kruidkoekmix. Both products are sold at a mill and mill shop. As product ranges and places of sale may change, check before your visit whether these specialities are available.
