Veessen lies on a large meander of the IJssel. The river is a common thread in choosing where to go: the Klompenwanderweg Elsvoorderpad trail runs through Veessen and along the river, a canoe route starts here, and the Kozakkenveer ferry carries cyclists across. When choosing accommodation, it is therefore worth considering which kind of landscape experience is most important to you. Hiking, paddling and cycling each have their own routes or conditions.
The IJssel, its meander and new nature
Veessen’s location on the IJssel gives it a different character from the flood channel near Veessen and Wapenveld. This channel is 8 kilometres long; the project also created new natural areas. Cycle paths run over the new dikes. This brings together a large river bend, a purpose-built flood area and paths along the dikes as distinct ways to experience the landscape. If you want to plan your time in the area around your interests, you can choose between being close to the river, cycling and other water-related activities, rather than assuming a fixed itinerary in advance.
Hiking, paddling and cycling
The Klompenwanderweg Elsvoorderpad trail connects the village route with the IJssel: it runs through Veessen and along the river. Green Klomp symbols mark the trail in both directions. The Noordoost-Veluwe canoe route offers a different focus. Its starting point is in the Nieuwe Wetering behind De Nijensteen in Veessen; the route is about 12 kilometres long. This makes it possible to assess the hiking option by its route and markers, while the canoe route also has an approximate distance.
Cyclists also have various options. Cycle paths run over the new dikes of the flood channel. The Kozakkenveer ferry departs from Veessen harbour and carries cyclists between Veessen and the Duursche Waarden nature reserve in Overijssel. Timetables vary by season; check the timetable before your trip if the crossing is part of your plans. The dike paths and the ferry crossing offer different ways to shape a cycling visit.
The church and festival in Veessen
One cultural highlight is the current church building, which dates from 1843. Its unusual octagonal shape gives the church a distinctive architectural feature. The annual village calendar also includes the Oranjefeest, organised by the Oranjecomité Veessen, Vorchten en Marle. The architecture and festival add two more facets to the landscape: a permanent building with a known construction date and an annual festival whose dates need to be planned separately each time.
Veessen as a place to stay
When looking for a hotel in Veessen, your preferred focus can guide your choice of location. If you mainly want to spend time outdoors, there are different options for hiking, paddling or cycling; if you are also looking for a cultural connection, you can consider the octagonal church and the Oranjefeest. For practical planning, the activities differ in what you need to take into account: the hiking trail is marked, the canoe route has a starting point and approximate distance, and the seasonal timetable matters for crossing on the Kozakkenveer. This helps you identify your own priorities without combining the different options into a single tour.
