The Kandiapad leads through the Rhine river landscape near Groessen; the Husloapad passes through rural areas with meadows, farmland and nature. Historic topics include De Welvaart, the remains of De Beerenclaauw and the history of the church’s construction. If you are planning a stay, these highlights can help you decide what interests you: hiking, landscape or history.
Walking between river landscapes and rural areas
The Kandiapad is a walking trail through the Rhine river landscape near Groessen. It crosses dikes, passes through the riverbank ridge landscape, follows church paths and runs through floodplains. At the beginning, a loop goes through the JezuĂŻetenwaai, where cattle and Konik horses graze. The route description therefore covers both named landscape features and this specific section. If you are particularly interested in river landscapes and floodplains when planning your trip, you can make the Kandiapad one of your main focuses.
The Husloapad passes through the rural area of Groessen, with meadows, farmland and nature. The surrounding countryside is also characterized by meadows, orchards and old farmhouses. The trail descriptions emphasize different things: the Kandiapad highlights the river landscape, dikes, riverbank ridge and floodplains, while the Husloapad focuses on the rural surroundings, with meadows and farmland. This lets you choose based on the landscape you are most interested in seeing on a walk.
Buildings and history
De Welvaart is a round, brick-built tower windmill with a gallery. The gallery is the walkway around the mill tower and is part of its described architectural form. At De Beerenclaauw, the cellars are the remains of a medieval havezate; parts of the standing masonry may also be among the remains. The historic sites therefore range from a building with a clearly defined tower form to the remains of a medieval estate.
The history of Groessen’s church spans several phases of construction. After Duiven became an independent parish in 1131, the church in Groessen was moved to a different location. A tower and a small Romanesque church were built there around 1150/1180. Around 1500, a Gothic church was added to the existing tower; its westernmost section has been preserved. The tower therefore predates the Gothic addition. This sequence makes it possible to understand the difference between the early Romanesque church and the later Gothic extension.
Rural surroundings and planning your visit
The landscape around Groessen is characterized by meadows, orchards and old farmhouses. Another historic landmark is Huis Rijswijck: a former havezate and a national heritage monument, first mentioned at its present location in 1328. Huis Rijswijck is on private property and is not freely accessible to visitors.
Schutterij EMM Groessen organizes an annual cycling tour on Ascension Day. Alongside the walking trails, visitors can therefore choose from different historic highlights and a recurring cycling event.
When looking for a hotel in Groessen, you can decide in advance what you want to focus on during your stay: walking the trails described here, enjoying the rural landscape, or exploring the history of the buildings and the church.
