The DuivenPad is a six-kilometre walking route featuring interesting facts about Duiven. It runs through the Liemers and offers a different view of the town. Other highlights include a historic copse, park paths and places of architectural or commemorative significance. You can shape your stay around walking, nature or local history; some individual visits also depend on specific opening times.
Walking, a Copse and a Park
At six kilometres, the DuivenPad has a clearly defined distance. At the same time, the route combines themes from Duiven with a course through the Liemers. It also passes Havezate Magerhorst. This makes the walk different from a short stroll in a park: it has a set length and offers interesting facts about the town.
The historic Patersbosje copse lies on the edge of the modern centre. Park de Nieuweling offers a different landscape, with a large pond and walking paths. When choosing between these natural areas, you can weigh the woodland character on the edge of the centre against a park landscape with water and paths.
A Short Park Walk and Horsterpark
Since 2010, Park de Nieuweling has had the Kijk- en doeroute, a short walking route with special litter bins, poems and a graffiti wall. It was developed by primary school pupils and students from Candea College. Compared with the DuivenPad, it is the shorter option; its defining features are not a stated distance in kilometres, but the elements along the walk. When choosing a route, you can therefore consider both the distance you want to cover and the character of each route.
Since September 2006, Horsterpark has had its own fully equipped children's farm. The animals include goats, sheep, ponies and rabbits, as well as two Kune Kune pigs, miniature cows and fallow deer. Horsterpark is also the venue for Dickens in de Liemers. It is located in a recreational area between Westervoort and Duiven. If you are planning your visit around the event, check the specific event dates in advance.
Architecture and Remembrance
Only the octagonal stair tower of the original building remains of Havezate Magerhorst. Octagonal means that the tower has eight sides. Above the entrance is a so-called mezekouw. The details about the havezate thus lead from the surviving structural feature to another precisely identified detail at the entrance.
Duiven’s war memorial offers a different historical perspective. It consists of a wooden cross on a circular base made of pebbles and red bricks. The memorial commemorates all fellow citizens who lost their lives through acts of war during the years of occupation. While a structural feature is the focus at the havezate, the memorial is linked to a specific act of remembrance.
Plan Around Visiting Hours
The Remigius Church is open outside service times every Tuesday from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. Opening hours can change, so check the time slot before your visit. The church and Dickens in de Liemers call for different kinds of planning: for the church, the stated Tuesday hours matter; for the event, the specific date. Check both in advance if you want to plan your stay around them.
