Wolvega offers a mix of local history, museums, distinctive buildings, horse racing and waterways. An augmented reality tour brings historical figures, stories and vanished buildings to life; collections and individual buildings highlight other aspects of cultural history. When planning your visit, you can choose between a walking tour, an event date and regional nature experiences, depending on your interests.

Historical Tour and Museums

The historical route through Wolvega is four kilometres long and starts at the ’t Kiekhuus Museum. Using augmented reality, it brings historical figures, stories and vanished buildings to life. The museum is located in the former De Korenschoof bakery. It features nostalgically styled rooms such as a grocery shop, a bakery and a classroom, as well as tin packaging and enamel advertising signs.

The Wolvega AR route can be downloaded in the MeAR Fryslân app for offline use. Download it before you set off; after downloading, it also works without an internet connection during the tour.

Everyday History and Historic Buildings

The collection at the Oudheidkamer Weststellingwerf includes a former grocery shop, a 1950s kitchen and a classroom with old wooden school desks. There is also a room with a box bed dating from 1920 and objects from traditional crafts. Since 2009, the Oudheidkamer has been housed in a former mayor’s residence dating from 1925.

The Windlust Mill was built by Wiebe Hooisma. Its brick base was newly constructed, while the upper section came from Mijdrecht. Windlust is the largest mill in Friesland and the surrounding area. Its construction history differs from that of Huize Lindenoord: after an earlier country house was destroyed by fire in 1776, it was rebuilt on the same site in the Louis XVI style.

The Grietenijhuis in Wolvega was built in 1835 on the initiative of Grietman Nicolaas van Heloma and the assessors of Weststellingwerf. The railway station building was constructed in 1865 as a fourth-class Waterstaat station. The different dates and building commissions give each historic site its own connection to a particular period.

Water and the Regional Landscape

The Schipsloot, dug in the 17th century, connects Wolvega to the Frisian hinterland via the Tsjonger. Merchant boatmen loaded and unloaded goods there. The canal thus represents a historic use of the water, while the “Leven met het water” cycling route offers a landscape perspective.

This route passes through the area around Wolvega and the Linde, taking in peat polders, various waterways and nature areas in the peaceful region of Southeast Friesland. Its themes therefore extend beyond local history to include the landscape of Southeast Friesland.

Horse Racing and Event Dates

Weekly harness races featuring horses from the Netherlands and abroad are held at Victoria Park Wolvega. Tickets for race events can be purchased online. The park also serves as a venue for family and corporate celebrations. If a race is the reason for your trip, check the specific date in advance.

The Linde Festival takes place in Wolvega every year. Check the current calendar for specific event dates if you want to plan your trip around it.
