Zandhuizen combines a clearly defined Esch landscape with striking examples of rural architectural history. In spring, the wood anemone, which is rare in the area, blooms along paths and ditches; several walking and cycling routes include the village as part of longer tours.

Esch Landscape and Nature Through the Seasons

Zandhuizen is an Esch village: the higher-lying land suitable for arable farming is surrounded on several sides by lower-lying grazing and hay meadows. This contrast between arable land and meadows defines the landscape form described for the village.

In spring, the rare wood anemone (Anemone nemorosa) blooms profusely in many places along paths and ditches in the village. The exact flowering time can vary from year to year. If you want to see the plant in spring, therefore, do not plan your visit around a fixed calendar date.

The Zandhuizerveld, nature areas managed by Staatsbosbeheer, and the Meenthebossen offer nature experiences throughout the year. The Bekhofplas is also part of the Staatsbosbeheer Súdeast-Fryslân natural area in the wider regional context. For most nature areas in Súdeast-Fryslân, the general rule in the wider region is that paths and trails are accessible year-round from sunrise to sunset. The specific access rules are posted at the entrances.

Architectural History and Village Character

The Rode Dorp (Red Village) began to take shape in 1920 on a spacious field: construction then began on 22 similar, relatively large houses for their time, each with a shed. The settlement got its name from the striking red colour of the bricks and roof tiles used to build it. The name thus directly refers to the building materials that characterised the settlement.

Another example of local architectural heritage is the farmhouse residence at Zandhuizerweg 39. Built in 1918, it is an example of the renewal style used in Weststellingwerf between 1915 and 1920. The complex is designated a municipal monument and is still used as a farmhouse with a residence. Its architectural features include the lavish use of materials, the design of the building volumes and the composition of the façade. Its construction date, regional style and current use each offer a different insight into the history of the farm.

For local orientation, Zandhuizen lies on the main provincial road between Steenwijk, Noordwolde and Oldeberkoop. In the Beekdal Linde area around Madenweg in Zandhuizen, completed works included restoring the course of the Linde and building a new cycle path.

Walking and Cycling Around Zandhuizen

The Miente en Bekhofschans circular walk is just over 18 kilometres long. It starts in Oldeberkoop and passes through the Stuttebosch, via Zandhuizen and Oosterstreek, to Noordwolde. Its landscape is shaped by peat extraction, stream valleys and sand ridges, with the Tjonger and Linde among its defining rivers.

A route description for the Noordwolde walking route, published on 16 May 2022, gives its length as 24.6 kilometres. The route passes through Oldeberkoop, Meenthe, Spokeplas, Zandhuizen and Bekhofplas before returning to Oldeberkoop. In a direct comparison of lengths, this route is longer than the Miente en Bekhofschans circular walk, which is just over 18 kilometres.

The 58-kilometre Friese Waterlinie II cycling route follows the defensive works of the Friese Waterlinie in southeast Friesland. The route goes from Oldeholtpade to Zandhuizen, then follows junction 28 to the historic Bekhofschans. While the Miente en Bekhofschans walking route focuses on the landscape, its rivers and landforms, the Friese Waterlinie II runs along historic defensive works. Routes and junction numbers may change, so check the latest route information before setting out.
