Oudega lies on the eastern edge of De Alde Feanen National Park. Nature and local history offer different starting points for a stay: views across the water and nature reserve, paths through diverse habitats, as well as historic buildings and cultural activities.
Nature on the edge of the national park
From De Wynwachter, the view stretches across the Meer van Oudega, De Alde Feanen National Park and the surrounding landscape. The viewpoint brings together the water, the nature reserve and the landscape around it in a single view.
Near Oudega, a walking route loops around the Jan Durkspolder. It is 8 km long and passes through reed beds, marshland, scrubland, grassland and open water. The variety of habitats gives this 8 km loop a varied landscape.
For active exploration, SUP boards and bicycles are available to rent from local providers in Oudega. You can use them to explore the water, village and surrounding area. Walking, SUP and cycling offer different ways to experience the landscape and the village.
Local cultural history
The oldest section of the Sint-Agathatsjerke’s masonry dates from around 1090 and was built from tuff stone. Its approximate age and material offer a tangible connection to the village’s architectural history.
During the Tsjerkepaad period in 2026, the Sint-Agathatsjerke was open to visitors on Saturdays from 4 July to 12 September. If you plan to visit later, please check the visitor information for your intended date.
The former Rechthuis of the Grietenij Smallingerland has stood in Oudega since around 1640. It once served as the administrative centre of the Grietenij Smallingerland. Its history adds another aspect of local history to the picture alongside the church. The oldest section of masonry dates back further than the former Rechthuis.
Routes and creative activities
The Op Ă© Trapers cultural and historical cycling route passes through Sumar, Oudega and Opeinde. In Oudega, it runs past various cultural and historical monuments and artworks. Its focus therefore differs from the walk around the Jan Durkspolder: this route highlights cycling, local history, monuments and art.
A garden studio in Oudega combines art with coffee or tea; workshops in pottery, painting and garden observation are also offered. Visits are planned according to seasonal opening hours or by appointment. Check the details to match your travel dates.
There are several ways to shape your trip around your interests: walking through diverse habitats, active exploration by SUP or bicycle, historic buildings and a cultural and historical cycling route, or creative workshops. If you are looking for a holiday home, you can first consider which of these themes you would like to shape your stay around.
