The pasture landscape of De Tike was created through the large-scale cultivation of heathland at the beginning of the 20th century. Two other themes are also relevant when choosing a destination: summer activities on De Leijen and the birdlife around the shallow fen lake. The time of year plays a specific role: water sports are possible in summer; marsh harriers and black-tailed godwits can be observed during migration. Weighing these options can help you focus your stay more on water activities or nature observation without losing sight of the area's history.

Landscape and the origins of De Tike

De Tike is located in Nationaal Landschap De Noardlike Fryske Wâlden. The landscape there is characterised by scattered buildings and alder hedgerows. Today's pasture landscape dates back to the large-scale cultivation of heathland at the beginning of the 20th century. The landscape and settlement history here are closely linked to the cultivation of peatland and heathland.

Traditionally, De Tike is a village that developed as a result of this cultivation. The settlement grew on a ridge of glacial till covered with sand, between two marshy fen areas. This location describes the natural setting in which the village originated; today's pasture landscape, in turn, bears the marks of later cultivation. Those interested in the area's development will find two distinct time periods here: the location of the settlement and the transformation of heathland at the beginning of the 20th century.

Summer activities on De Leijen

In summer, sailing, canoeing, stand-up paddleboarding and surfing are possible on De Leijen. De Tike also has its own small harbour, with a landing stage for small motorboats and a canoe launch. This means that local information covers both seasonal water sports and specific harbour facilities. If water activities are important to your trip, summer is the time of year explicitly given for these options.

The two details answer different planning questions: four water sports are described for summer on De Leijen; the harbour in De Tike offers a landing stage and a canoe launch. Check current conditions for seasonal activities before setting off.

Birdwatching by the fen lake

The De Blaustirns birdwatching hide is located on De Leijen. Whooper swans and various species of geese forage by the shallow fen lake. During migration, birds such as marsh harriers and black-tailed godwits can be observed there. The information about birdlife also provides a seasonal reference: unlike the water sports, these sightings are specifically associated with migration.

Nature observation can therefore be considered a separate focus alongside activities on the water. If you plan your trip around it, you can treat summer water sports and birdwatching during migration as separate interests. The birdwatching hide is called De Blaustirns and is located on De Leijen.

A war memorial in the village

The history of remembrance is another specific feature of the village. The war memorial in De Tike is a natural stone plaque with an inscription, mounted in the brick wall in front of the schoolyard of PCBO De Gielguorde. It commemorates the two victims of war, Freerk Veenstra and Walter Wince. Its form, material, inscription and dedication make the memorial a clearly defined part of local history. It is in front of the schoolyard; the description of the memorial does not say that the school grounds are accessible.

Planning your journey

De Tike has no regular public transport. Instead, Opstapper and/or Belbus services operate only with advance reservations. So don't plan to travel spontaneously using a regular public transport service. Check in advance which reservation options apply to your travel date and plan your journey accordingly. This practical limitation is particularly important if you have chosen activities on De Leijen or the area's landscape history as the focus of your stay: you can plan around the seasons, but the reservation-only journey needs to be arranged separately.
