Marknesse can be explored through several distinct interests: cultural heritage, forest nature and waterways shape the choice of themes. There is also art in Waterloopbos, seasonal tulip picking and activities involving wine and boating. To plan your trip, you can first decide whether you are mainly interested in history, nature or leisure on the water. Timing matters too: the Fietspont operates only between 1 March and 31 October, tulips can usually be picked in April and May, and you should check opening hours and the availability of guided tours in advance.

History and Art in Waterloopbos

Waterloopbos is a Rijksmonument and a historic open-air laboratory in a polder forest. Deltawerk// is a work of art in Waterloopbos near Marknesse. The area served as a testing ground for the Delta Works; a former huge wave basin was later transformed into an impressive tribute to the research conducted there. To create Deltawerk//, large concrete slabs were cut from the walls of the 250-metre-long Deltagerinne, turned and placed at different angles. This creates an interplay of light and darkness. The work thus combines concrete materials and forms with the site’s research history.

The Markehuisje is also part of Marknesse’s cultural heritage: it is the oldest stone building in the Noordoostpolder. This brings two different themes together—the history of water research in Waterloopbos and the built heritage of the Noordoostpolder.

Right next to the monumental work of art Deltawerk// is the Het ProefLab// pavilion. It houses both a restaurant and Natuurmonumenten’s visitor centre for Waterloopbos. Check the opening hours before your visit, as opening arrangements may change.

Forest Nature and Routes

Wendelbos borders Waterloopbos. The 120-hectare nature area was established as a moist deciduous forest in 2006. Many songbirds nest there, many roe deer live there and numerous butterfly species can be found; possible sightings vary with the season. While the historic open-air laboratory defines the character of Waterloopbos, forest type and wildlife take centre stage in Wendelbos.

The Lichtbakenroute offers another connection to the landscape. It begins in the village square in the centre of Marknesse and links the old land of Overijssel with the new land of Noordoostpolder. The starting point is in the village, while the route’s theme reaches beyond Marknesse: it focuses on the connection between old and new land.

Waterways and Boating Experiences

Marknesse lies on the Zwolse Vaart and the Marknesservaart and is a suitable destination or stopover for recreational boating. The Zwolse Vaart is 15 kilometres long and runs from Emmeloord via Marknesse through Voorsterbos to the Voorstersluis. Its length and the places along it provide a concrete point of reference for anyone planning a trip along this waterway.

At Natural Yachts, visitors can explore different models and learn about electric boating in the experience centre. Natural Yachts also rents out motorboats, sailing yachts and X-Shore tenders; the X-Shore tenders are fully electric. The rental fleet also includes electrically powered Maxus sailboats, including the Maxus Evo 24 Electric and Maxus 34 Electric models. The experience centre is for learning about the boats, while the rental service offers specific boat models. Availability depends on the provider’s terms; check these before making plans.

The short, free Kraggenburg–Waterloopbos Fietspont connects Kraggenburg with Waterloopbos. A maximum of four cyclists or pedestrians can use the ferry at a time. It operates from 1 March to 31 October. Before travelling, check the operating dates for your chosen day.

Seasonal Experiences and Local Offerings

At the tulip-picking garden in Marknesse, visitors can pick a bucket or basket of colourful tulips during tulip season. The season is usually in April and May; the exact dates may vary from year to year. If picking tulips is important to your trip, check in advance when it takes place.

Wijngaard en Boerderijwinkel Maronesse in Marknesse offers guided tours and wine tastings. For both activities, check booking requirements and seasonal availability in advance. This lets you plan around their different timing: tulip picking depends on the flowering season, while it is advisable to enquire in advance about tours and tastings.
