Roderwolde combines the history of windmills and church architecture with landscapes in and north of the village. The Woldzigt oil and grain mill was built in 1852; De Kleibosch is near Roderwolde, and De Onlanden stretches to the north. There are also walking routes of varying lengths and recurring cultural events. When planning a stay, you can choose what to focus on: architectural history, landscapes or the length of a walk. The specific route distances and event dates offer different points of reference.

Windmill and Churches: Historical Points of Interest

The Woldzigt oil and grain mill in Roderwolde was built in 1852. The churches also offer tangible links to the past. The new Reformed church was built at Hoofdstraat 25 in 1831; its tower and façade were constructed from materials salvaged from the old church. Jacobskerk Roderwolde houses a baptismal font dating from the 15th century. The churches therefore offer historical points of interest ranging from the construction of the new Reformed church to an older furnishing. Visitors interested in cultural history will find both architectural history and a 15th-century baptismal font here.

De Kleibosch: Woodland and Geological History

De Kleibosch, near Roderwolde, is a very wet woodland on the edge of the Peizerdiep valley. Remains of old clay pits can be seen along its winding paths. The woodland has the status of a provincial geological monument because pottery clay lies at the surface there. This special geological feature is visible in a specific characteristic of the landscape: the exposed pottery clay. De Kleibosch offers an unmarked walking route of 5.5 kilometres. If you choose this route, bear in mind that it is not signposted when finding your way. When planning, therefore, consider the woodland's wet conditions, the route length and the type of waymarking.

De Onlanden and the Walking Routes

North of Roderwolde, De Onlanden stretches across a wetland of grassland, marshes, small marsh woodlands and waterways. The Knapzakroute Roderwolde-Foxwolde (K24) is a 15.5-kilometre walking route. Compared with the 5.5-kilometre route in De Kleibosch, it is ten kilometres longer. This gives you a concrete point of reference when weighing up the length of a walk. Another landscape feature can be found on the second section of the Groeningenpad: there, the route passes through De Onlanden alongside reed beds and natural play areas. You can therefore choose not only by route length, but also by the landscape features described.

Cultural Events Throughout the Year

At Woldzigt, an oil pressing demonstration takes place on the first Saturday of every month. If you plan to attend, check the specific date before travelling. The Openluchtspel in Roderwolde is an open-air theatre performance held annually at the end of August. The mill demonstration takes place monthly, while the open-air theatre is a late-summer event. If you want to plan your trip around either event, check the specific date in advance.
