A new raised bog is developing at Moltmakersstuk. The 17-kilometre Lieveren-Roderesch-Knapzakroute K23 and the annual RAS Festival Week, celebrated together, provide further reasons to visit Roderesch. Nature, walking and local history offer different focuses; you can weigh them up according to your interests when deciding what should shape your stay.

Landscape and orientation

Roderesch’s scattered buildings are set in a wooded landscape. On the northern side is a brink-like area planted with oaks; the esch fields border Mensingebos. Several woodland plots and the Holveen bog separate Roderesch from Alteveer. This creates a contrast between the neighbouring esch fields and the natural features that mark the way towards Alteveer.

Heathland, raised bog and fen lakes

Moltmakersstuk is the largest heathland area, stretching from west to east through Mensingebos. A new raised bog is developing at Moltmakersstuk. During a walk there, you can observe from the boardwalk that the sphagnum moss is thriving in the water. The view thus ranges from the extent of the heathland to a specific observation by the water; both reveal different aspects of this landscape.

The Noorderduinen lie between Roderesch and Steenbergen. They are home to the megalithic tomb D1 and several large fen lakes. Compared with Moltmakersstuk, the focus here is on the tomb and the lakes. If you would like to include an archaeological destination alongside the heathland and bog landscape, the Noorderduinen offer a distinct focus.

Walking and other activities

The Lieveren-Roderesch-Knapzakroute K23 is 17 kilometres long. One starting point is Herberg van Es, Hoofdweg 1, 9305 TD Roderesch. The route’s length gives your walking plans a clear measure; Herberg van Es also serves homemade cakes with coffee. So, as well as being a starting point for the route, the inn has a culinary connection.

Bushtrail is one of the activities at De Zwerfsteen, Esweg 18, 9305 TB Roderesch. You can include Bushtrail in your travel plans as an alternative to the Knapzakroute. The route offers a specific distance to plan around; Bushtrail is a different kind of activity based at De Zwerfsteen.

Local history and RAS Festival Week

Roderesch developed as an esch village during the 19th century. This historical connection differs from the megalithic tomb D1 in the Noorderduinen: one is about the development of the village, the other about a specific archaeological destination. Roderesch, Alteveer and Steenbergen celebrate RAS Festival Week together each year. A longer-term historical process and a recurring shared event thus stand side by side. If you plan to travel for the festival week, check the dates in advance.
