Church architecture, the history of the mill and walking routes with specific distances give a stay in Norg a range of different focuses. There are also events whose programmes or installations vary from one edition to the next. When looking for a hotel in Norg, you can therefore first consider whether history, activity or a particular event date is the deciding factor for your trip.

Church and the history of the mill

The Margarethakerk dates from the second half of the 13th century. It is a late Romanesque hall church with a simple saddle-roof tower. The nave has been altered; the chancel is narrower and has a rounded end. These architectural features offer concrete points of reference for anyone interested in religious architecture.

The De Hoop mill adds a much more recent building history to this older historical context: it was built in 1857 as a barley mill for Harmannus Beins. The church and mill thus represent different eras; their respective construction dates help place their historical contexts in time. The Margarethakerk is also regularly used as a venue for classical concerts. As the concert programme may change, check the dates if attending a concert is part of your travel plans.

Choose walking routes by distance

The Norger Esdorpenlandschap includes drift-sand forests and the stream valleys of the Slokkert, the Grote Diep and the Oostervoortse Diep. A 10.5-kilometre walking route passes through this landscape and is marked mostly with blue-and-yellow posts. The markers and stated distance provide clear guidance when choosing a walk.

There is another selection of routes at Natuurplaats Noordsche Veld: various walking routes can be picked up there during the visitor centre’s opening hours. These include a 6-kilometre route marked in purple and a 13-kilometre route marked in yellow. The different distances make it easy to choose the length of route without needing to estimate how long the walk will take.

For those who want to combine art and activity, Folly Art Norg offers a 7.5-kilometre art trail through the Drenthe landscape. The project brings together art, architecture and design in the form of so-called follies. The route returns regularly, but its installations may differ from one edition to the next.

Events and leisure

The Worteldagen festival presents theatre and visual art at intimate indoor and outdoor venues in the village of Norg. Its routes lead to four locations on foot or by bicycle, accompanied by guides. Visitors see performances lasting 7 to 10 minutes at each location. The programme and dates vary by edition, so take the specific festival edition into account when planning your trip.

For recreational swimming, Molenduinbad Norg offers facilities for children and adults during opening hours. These include a 25-metre pool, a 30-metre slide, a current channel, a leisure pool and a bubble bench. If swimming is important to your stay, plan it within the opening hours.

Village character and practical information

Norg’s traditional landscape includes many preserved traditional esch fields, meaning pastureland, and wooded banks. The village centre also has several traditional brinken. Near Norg lies Norgerholt, which is part of the Natura 2000 network and has been designated a forest reserve. Alongside the architectural heritage, this brings landscape features and a protected woodland into view as distinct topics.

Norg is served by QBuzz bus route 83 and Arriva bus route 84. As transport information can change, check the connections before travelling. Free parking is available in Norg, including a large car park at Brinkhof; check the parking rules locally.

For a longer cycling loop, the Drenthe Periphery Route 10 Norg is another option: it is 55 kilometres long and starts and ends at the Oosteind/Peesterstraat junction in Norg. As the route and infrastructure may change, check the route before setting off. This makes it easy to distinguish the walking routes from the longer cycling route by their stated distances.
