Hoachanas combines a distinctive structure with a complex history. At Hoachanas Business Park, the large roof creates a space beneath the large trees planted there where the community can gather and braai. Shaded braai areas are located around the park and on its concrete roof; the rooftop braai offers views over the entire settlement. The rooftop braai brings communal get-togethers together with views across the settlement. The Business Park also includes a bakery, a shop and a coffee bar. This brings community use and everyday amenities together in the same complex. Before planning a visit, it is advisable to check access and the current operating status of the three businesses.
Nama and local history
The Rooi Nasie, a subgroup of the Nama, is based in Hoachanas. Historically, the town became the headquarters of the Kai//khaun. A peace treaty was also signed in Hoachanas with 13 Nama leaders and two sons of the Herero leader Ua Tjirue Tjamuaha. Franz Heinrich Vollmer of the RMS established a mission station there. The historical connections therefore span cultural roots and a former leadership role, as well as the peace treaty and mission history.
