Uis is in the Erongo Region in northwestern Namibia; nearby, Brandberg brings together rock art, archaeological sites and striking mountain scenery. This combination gives the search for accommodation in Uis a specific point of reference: you can assess the destination based on whether the culture and landscape of Brandberg match your interests.

Brandberg: Rock Art and Mountain Scenery

More than 120 archaeological sites have been recorded at Brandberg; the area also has more than 43,000 prehistoric rock paintings. Rock engravings and rock paintings are closely associated. The figures describe different aspects: one refers to archaeological sites, the other to the number of prehistoric paintings. The nearby area thus brings together archaeological evidence and an extensive collection of rock art.

Brandberg is Namibia’s highest mountain and stands out as a striking landscape feature against the otherwise flat gravel plains of the central Namib Desert. The large, almost circular inselberg rises more than 1,800 metres above the surrounding plains; its highest summit reaches 2,573 metres. The two figures use different reference points: the rise above the plain and the summit’s elevation. Together, they convey the mountain’s scale and shape without treating the different elevations as equivalent.

Information and Guided Experiences

The Uis Information Centre is a tourism project for visitors to the area around Uis. It provided information about the region, particularly Brandberg, the Daureb Mountain Guides and guided hikes to the San paintings, including the famous White Lady.

Local tour guides offer guided hikes to Brandberg, with information about the local environment and rock art. Longer treks and overnight camps are available on request. If you plan one of these tours, check the current arrangements before travelling.

Erongo as a Wider Travel Region

The wider travel region of Erongo offers other points of interest of a different kind. Cape Cross Seal Reserve is home to a protected area for the world’s largest breeding colony of Cape fur seals. During the breeding season in November and December, up to 210,000 animals gather there; this seasonal peak is an estimate and can vary from year to year. Cape Cross also has historical significance: Portuguese explorer Diogo Cão landed there in 1486 and erected a stone padrão. The area, including a second replica, is designated a National Heritage Site.

Another natural landmark in northwestern Erongo is Spitzkoppe. Often called the “Matterhorn of Namibia,” it is almost 700 million years old. Its highest point reaches 1,784 metres above sea level and stands around 700 metres above the surrounding plain. At Spitzkoppe, both the summit’s elevation above sea level and its height above the plain are relevant. This adds another distinct landscape highlight in Erongo to the picture of Brandberg.
