For travelers who want to learn more about conservation in Gorongosa, Chitengo offers two different perspectives: a tour of the E.O. Wilson Biodiversity Lab and guided safaris in open vehicles. The scientific work and the safari offering appeal to different interests; which option you choose depends on whether you are more interested in research or a guided drive.

Understanding Research in Gorongosa

The E.O. Wilson Biodiversity Lab is located in Chitengo, in the heart of the national park. It is a modern scientific facility and one of the first of its kind in Africa. As a central facility for Gorongosa’s various science programs, it connects a specific place with topics such as biodiversity documentation, ecology, and conservation biology.

The lab offers long-term research and training opportunities for people from Mozambique, visiting researchers, and students. Its three fields of study give an idea of the scope of this work: from documenting biological diversity and ecological relationships to conservation biology. A tour of the E.O. Wilson Biodiversity Lab will teach you more about Gorongosa’s conservation approach. Tours are subject to availability; to book, contact the Activities Office after you arrive in Chitengo.

Tour or Safari

Those interested in the scientific perspective can consider a tour of the lab. Another option is a guided safari in an open vehicle. Safaris depart either from Chitengo Camp or Montebelo Gorongosa Lodge and Safari. Confirm current operating details when booking. This lets you distinguish between the two offerings by their nature without assuming availability: the tour focuses on the conservation approach, while the safari is a guided drive in an open vehicle.

A Playground for Young Children

Chitengo has a playground for young children, with a slide, swings, and play equipment shaped like African animals. If you are traveling with young children and this area is important to your plans, check its current availability in advance.

Sofala: Nature and Culture in the Wider Destination

In the wider destination of Sofala, hiking is available in the Gorongosa Mountains within Gorongosa National Park; seasonal access restrictions apply. At Marromeu National Reserve, visitors can hike across plains and go on safaris where buffalo live. May and June are considered suitable months for safaris there; the climate is moderate during these months.

Beira is the coastal capital of Sofala Province. The Rio Chiveve in Beira has recreational facilities such as an amphitheater and green spaces; the river also serves as a gathering place for the community and visitors. The Catedral da Beira on Avenida Eduardo Mondlane is considered a historic and architectural landmark of Mozambique. Casa dos Bicos on Avenida Samora Machel in Beira is a building of great historical and architectural significance.

Art and culture are also among Sofala’s attractions: Casa do Artista da Cidade da Beira is a cultural meeting place that promotes art and culture. Check what programs are currently offered before visiting. The Utse dance of the Sena is practiced in the districts in northern and central Sofala through which the Zambezi flows.
