Chidenguele offers three distinct starting points for a stay: the historic Bao Paz Lighthouse, a walking trail to freshwater lakes, and nearby coastal destinations. This lets you focus on a historic landmark, a specific route, or beach and water sports activities.
Bao Paz Lighthouse and Trail to the Lakes
The historic Bao Paz Lighthouse is located in Chidenguele. A 3 km walking trail leads to it, passing three freshwater lakes along the way. This makes a historic landmark and several lakes part of the same route. The trail length is a specific planning detail; before setting out, also check the current condition of the trail locally.
Praia de Chidenguele: Beach and Access Road
Praia de Chidenguele is nearby. The beach is about 5 km from the EN1; after the turnoff near the small town of Chidenguele, an unpaved road leads there. Road and access conditions can change, so it is worth checking them locally before driving. The beach is especially popular with visitors during the peak tourist season: in summer, at Easter, during the holidays, and at year-end.
In Gaza Province, Praia de Chidenguele is considered suitable for swimming and diving. The water is considered calm, and the waves are not dangerous. Coral reefs are visible even without diving to great depths; there is also a variety of fish in different types and colors. A special access point is Kings Pool, a natural pool at the beach: it can only be reached at low tide by driving along the coast. There is no alternative access road or route. Check the tides and local conditions before setting out.
Lake Nhambavale and Water Sports
Lake Nhambavale is about 5 km from the main road and the town of Chidenguele. In 2011, the canoeing events of the 10th African Games were held there. Resorts around the lake offer numerous water sports; check with your chosen resort for the specific activities available. Unlike the seasonal use of Praia, water sports at the resorts are the main focus at the lake. The two destinations therefore offer different starting points for planning your excursions.
More Nature Destinations in Gaza Province
Gaza Province also offers a broader setting for nature and cultural experiences. Its beaches stretch along 150 km of coastline. Sandy grasslands, mopane savannas, wooded savannas, and floodplains shape the landscape of Limpopo National Park. Together with the border areas of South Africa and Zimbabwe, the park forms the Greater Limpopo transboundary area. The zone along the Shingwedzi River is considered suitable for wildlife viewing, challenging hikes, and safaris.
Banhine National Park in Gaza Province is characterized by semiarid savanna, lagoons, and baobab trees. Its extensive seasonal wetlands have ecological features similar to those of the Okavango Delta; hence the park is known as a “mini-Okavango.” Visitors can hike its trails, go on safaris, canoe, and enjoy cultural tourism. These park landscapes complement the province with different nature and activity highlights from the beach, walking trail, and water sports around Chidenguele.
