The orchid house at the Montserrat National Trust Botanical Gardens is home to the endemic and endangered Montserrat orchid (Epidendrum montserratense). The gardens also include a medicinal plant garden, a cactus and succulent garden, and a palm promenade. You can explore a variety of botanical collections here, with the rare orchid offering a particularly tangible glimpse of the island’s natural heritage.

Botanical Gardens and Cultural Heritage

Montserrat’s history and culture can also be explored from different perspectives. The Montserrat National Museum in Little Bay displays artifacts and exhibitions on the island’s history and culture, from pre-Columbian times to the present day. Check the current visitor guidelines before your visit. The Montserrat National Trust preserves and protects the island’s cultural, historical and archaeological heritage.

Montserrat Volcano Observatory is part of the island’s more recent history: it was established in response to the volcanic eruption that began in July 1995. Plymouth offers another way to learn about the island’s history, but is accessible only with a certified tour guide. The town is located in Montserrat’s Exclusion Zone (Zone V); confirm current tour arrangements before visiting.

Hiking Trails for Different Ability Levels

The hiking trails vary in route and difficulty. The Hope Ridge Trail passes through cloud forest to Elfin Forest on Baker Hill Mountain, at an elevation of about 2,300 feet. According to the trail description, the hike is suitable only for fit, very experienced hikers. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

The Oriole Walkway climbs gently at first, then steeply to Lawyer’s Mountain. A short turnoff leads to a clearing at the trail’s highest point, 1,287 feet above sea level; from there, views extend north and south across the island. The Dry Waterfall Trail passes through several moderately difficult gullies. Part of it runs directly along the rocky bed of Soldier Ghaut. The Duberry-Cassava Trail also offers two options: you can choose it as a hike in its own right or use it as a link between The Cot and the Oriole Walkway. Check current trail conditions before hiking.

The Dry Waterfall itself is about 100 feet high and carries water only during the rainy season or after heavy rainfall. The waterfall and the trail offer two different considerations when planning a visit: rainfall is key for the waterfall, while the trail information concerns its route and terrain. The Centre Hills, meanwhile, are a birdwatching area in the eastern Caribbean.

Reefs, Coast and Water

Below the surface, Montserrat’s reefs feature structures covered in corals and sponges that are associated with the island’s volcanic activity. Visitors to the reefs can often spot sea turtles, stingrays and fish. Green turtles, leatherback turtles and hawksbill turtles are found along Montserrat’s coast; wildlife encounters are not guaranteed.

Stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking are available in the relatively calm Caribbean Sea around Little Bay. You can also reach Rendezvous Bay by kayak for snorkeling. The beach is described as Montserrat’s only white-sand beach. Check current sea conditions and with activity providers before setting out.

From Little Bay, a tour guide can also take you to a colony of Antillean fruit bats in two caves. Confirm current tour arrangements in advance. The area combines different nature experiences, with activities on the water alongside a guided visit to a cave colony.

Traditions and Flavors

The calabash fruit is connected to Montserrat’s African heritage. Traditionally, it was used to make tableware, musical instruments, bags and decorative objects. Goat Water is Montserrat’s national dish, adding a culinary facet of the island to its nature and culture.
