Preah Vihear shows how temple architecture and landscape together shape a place. Several shrines are connected by paths and stairways along an 800-meter axis. The temple stands on the edge of a plateau overlooking Cambodia’s plains and is dedicated to Shiva. The view of the complex is therefore shaped both by the connection between the shrines and by its position on the plateau.

Temples on Different Scales

Angkor is in Siem Reap Province and covers about 400 square kilometers. The site includes numerous temples as well as waterworks such as pools, dams, reservoirs and canals; transport routes are also part of it. The view therefore ranges from individual monuments to the wider interplay of temples, waterworks and routes. The temple monuments and surrounding jungle offer opportunities for photography. Subjects can focus both on the built forms and on the surrounding landscape.

Sambor Prei Kuk offers a different architectural focus. The temple zone comprises 186 brick temples with sandstone details. Its unique artistic style combines Hindu, animist and Buddhist elements and foreshadowed the Khmer style later developed at Angkor. This makes it possible to consider not only the materials but also the art-historical connection to Angkor.

The differences are not only a matter of scale: Angkor brings temples, waterworks and transport routes together across a large area; Sambor Prei Kuk draws attention to brick construction and the history of its style; Preah Vihear stands out for its connected shrines and plateau setting. If you want to compare cultural sites, these offer different points of focus—from the size of a complex and its artistic development to the arrangement of its structures.

Water Landscapes and Coast

In northeastern Cambodia, the Tonle Sap Biosphere Reserve encompasses Tonle Sap Lake, the surrounding floodplains and freshwater marshes. It also includes seasonally flooded rice fields and grassland. The lake is therefore part of a broader landscape that also includes wetlands, fields and grassland. Nature enthusiasts can focus on something different here than at the temple sites: the landscape encompasses several habitats and their seasonal character.

In Kampot District, the Teuk Chhu stream is in Snomprampi village; its water flows over large rocks year-round. Prek Ampil, also in Kampot District, offers another connection to water and landscape: this coastal settlement is in Koh Toch Commune, about 18 kilometers west of the provincial capital. It has a white-sand beach, with numerous mangroves and coconut palms growing nearby. The comparison shows water in different forms—a stream flowing over rocks and a coastline with a beach and nearby vegetation.

Prek Thnout adds a national park connection to the Kampot section: the settlement is partly within Bokor National Park and in Kampot Province, between Sihanouk Ville and Kampot Town. Together with the stream and coast, this description of the location offers another perspective on the province’s landscape.

A Note for Planning Your Visit

Section A of the Cambodian Memorial Sites is currently closed to visitors. Check its visitor status again before your trip.

When looking for hotels in Cambodia, you can start by deciding what you want to focus on during your trip: temple architecture, landscapes around Tonle Sap, or the coastal and stream landscapes of Kampot. This lets you plan around the discoveries that interest you most, without assuming a set order for the topics mentioned.
