Get to know Ulcinj through two very different sides: the clearly structured Old Town and the protected landscape of Valdanos. There are also historical traces near Shas and experiences shaped by wind conditions, the season or current visitor regulations.

The Old Town: a structured layout and building history

Ulcinj Old Town was protected as a cultural asset of national importance in 1961. Its layout distinguishes an upper area dominated by the citadel, with a military character, from a lower civilian settlement. Fortification walls surround the Old Town. Thus, two distinct areas sit side by side within the complex, rather than forming a uniform townscape.

A specific historical sequence is illustrated by St. Mary’s Church: it was built in 1510 and converted into a mosque in 1571. The Church-Mosque houses the Ulcinj City Museum. These two details point to different aspects of history: the transformation of a building over time and the city museum as a cultural venue. Before visiting, check the current opportunities to visit the museum.

Valdanos: olive grove and natural monument

The Valdanos olive grove contains around 18,000 trees with an average age of 800 years, and is under special state protection. The number indicates a large grove; the average age also gives an idea of its historic character. Valdanos also has a 376-metre-long beach that has been declared a natural monument. The olive grove and the beach are two distinct features of the place: one is defined by its trees, the other by its protected status and length.

Shas: historic town and church ruins

The historic town of Shas lies on 85-metre-high Shas Hill, north of Lake Shas. From there, you can enjoy views of the lake and the entire Bojana Delta. Archaeological finds also give the site a distinct historical dimension: the ruins of around ten ancient churches have been found in Shas, including the churches of St. John and St. Mary. Here, you will encounter both a striking location in the landscape and traces of earlier buildings.

Wind, water and birdwatching

At Velika Plazha, the mistral is an essential condition for kitesurfing; seasonal wind conditions can vary. If you plan this activity, keep an eye on conditions during your travel period. At Ladies’ Beach, sulphur-rich mineral springs are found in the shallower waters. The springs are a natural feature of the beach; they are not associated with any medical benefits.

The Ulcinj Salina has infrastructure that is important for birdwatching. Check the current visitor regulations on site before visiting. This lets you include birdwatching in your plans without assuming fixed visiting conditions.

Events, wine and practical information

The event “Ljetnja scena – Summer Scene” takes place in Ulcinj Old Town, at Sklavenplatz in front of the Balšić Tower, during the first three weeks of August. If you plan to attend during your trip, check the exact dates for the relevant travel year. Visitors can also visit wine cellars in Ulcinj and sample local wine. Availability at individual cellars may vary, so confirm your visit in advance.

Buses connect Ada Bojana with Ulcinj. As transport information may change seasonally, check the timetable for your travel date before setting off. This will help you account for both the connection and any possible seasonal changes when planning.
