Njegovuđa offers two distinct insights into rural culture: at Aluško Borje, household history and tastings take centre stage, while Chalets Podgorom combines accommodation with outdoor activities. When planning your trip, it is worth keeping these offerings separate. If you would like to arrange excursions or plan seasonal activities, confirm their availability before travelling.
Aluško Borje: House, Exhibition and Tastings
At the Aluško Borje rural household in Njegovuđa, a traditionally furnished stone house serves as a mini ethnographic museum. On display are household items, tools, and weapons used by the hosts’ ancestors. The experience therefore includes not only the house itself but also items from the everyday lives of earlier generations.
The experience includes tastings of locally produced meat and dairy products, as well as homemade bread, pies, kačamak, cicvara, and buckwheat pie. The food adds a culinary offering to the cultural experience; the specific selection may vary.
Rural Activities with Different Focuses
Aluško Borje can arrange hiking and cycling tours, horse riding, visits to glacial lakes, jeep safaris, and rafting trips through the Tara Canyon. Confirm the availability of these organised activities before travelling.
At Chalets Podgorom in Njegovuđa, rural activities include gathering herbs and wild berries, hiking, horse riding, fishing, and cycling. The offering therefore includes not only exercise but also gathering and fishing. Seasonal availability may vary.
Chalets Podgorom: Location and Accommodation
Chalets Podgorom is located in Njegovuđa, three kilometres from the Žabljak–Pljevlja main road, on a local road towards Vražje Lake and other lakes in Durmitor National Park. Road conditions and services may change; check the current situation before arrival.
The accommodation offers wooden cabins and bungalows with an architectural concept based on traditional Durmitor construction. Montenegrin specialities made with local ingredients are served in a traditional-style tasting room.
Žabljak as the Wider Natural and Cultural Setting
In the wider destination of Žabljak, Durmitor National Park encompasses 18 glacial lakes; Black Lake is the largest and best known. It lies three kilometres southwest of Žabljak at an altitude of 1,418 metres and is Montenegro’s second-largest mountain lake. The lake is under UNESCO protection and has a rare bifurcation: its water flows underground into the Tara and Piva rivers. Several marked hiking and walking trails start at Black Lake; a constructed footpath leads from there to Zminje Lake.
Vražje Lake is also part of the wider destination of Žabljak. It lies within the municipality of Žabljak, is part of Durmitor National Park, and is a glacial lake with crystal-clear water.
Žabljak’s cultural heritage includes UNESCO-protected medieval tombstones known as stećci, located near Riblje Lake in the village of Novakovići. Registered religious heritage includes single-nave stone churches with bell towers on their façades, dating from the first half or the end of the 19th century. The Wild Beauty Art Festival is a multidisciplinary arts event held every summer in Žabljak.
