Hiking trails range from gentle family walks to challenging mountain climbs. This gives you a variety of options, without having to fit them all into a single itinerary.

Landscapes of Lakes, Peaks and Canyons

Žabljak lies at the foot of Durmitor and is connected to the Tara Canyon. Durmitor has 48 peaks rising above 2,000 metres. Black Lake is 2 km from Žabljak and is the largest and most attractive of Durmitor’s 18 glacial lakes. The lake and its surrounding forest are among the specially protected areas of Durmitor National Park.

Hiking from Walks to Summits

Hiking routes pass through peaks, forests and meadows, and alongside lakes. A gentle family walk and a challenging mountain climb place different demands on a hike. Durmitor is listed as having 27 marked and 12 unmarked trails. Trail information can change as routes are maintained or added, so check the latest information before setting out and choose a route that suits your plans.

The Planinica Peak Loop starts in Žabljak and runs through wooded terrain to Zminje Lake; route information may also be updated. Jablan Lake is often included in hiking and educational routes in the Žabljak and Durmitor National Park area. These descriptions refer to different ways to explore the landscape on foot, not to a single combined route.

Finding Your Way on the Durmitor Ring

The Durmitor Ring starts in the centre of Žabljak. In both directions, brown signs marked “Panoramic Roads” and numbered 2 point the way. Signage may change, so check locally before driving. Road conditions can also vary. The panoramic road can therefore be planned as a distinct activity, alongside hiking and winter options.

Winter Activities in Žabljak

Savin Kuk ski resort has a total of 4.6 kilometres of slopes in blue, red, black and children’s categories. Facilities include ski servicing, a ski school, restaurants and a coffee bar. Near the sports centre in Žabljak, a marked cross-country skiing trail forms a loop through a planted forest belt and back to town. This is a seasonal winter route. Ski hire and access to licensed ski instructors are also available at the sports centre; these offerings may change between seasons. Slopes in several categories and a cross-country skiing loop are different winter sports options, which you can choose according to the activity you have in mind.

A Historical Landmark

The Church of the Holy Transfiguration was built in 1862 and is considered the only historic building to have survived the destruction of the war. It adds a historical landmark in town to Žabljak’s landscape and leisure offerings.
