Petrovac Na Moru combines a coastline with predominantly reddish sand and a developed waterfront with a history dating back to Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages. Kastio is the local name for a 16th-century Venetian fortress above the present-day harbor. There are also mosaics, churches and a cultural center with a program shaped particularly by the summer season. When planning your trip, you can consider the coast and culture as distinct areas of interest.

Coast and orientation by the water

Petrovac Beach is predominantly characterized by reddish sand; its length is given as around 600 meters. The waterfront is developed and lined by a promenade. Pristanište Petrovac is at the western end of the waterfront. The facility is used seasonally for landing and mooring watercraft. The operating pier is designated as 45 meters for landing and 80 meters for mooring. Since use is seasonal and technical details may be revised, check them before making specific plans.

For a different coastal impression, LuÄŤice lies 500 meters south of Petrovac. The sandy beach is in a bay lined with cypress and pine trees. The two islets off Petrovac are also useful landmarks along the coast: a chapel stands on the rocks of Sveta Nedjelja, and the second island is called KatiÄŤ. Highlights include the islets and the Petrovac Riviera.

The BuljariÄŤko polje wetland lies about two kilometers from Petrovac. This marshy area is a nature reserve for rare plant and bird species. These different landscapes sit side by side: the sandy beach and wooded bay of LuÄŤice, as well as the protected wetland. Access conditions in the nature reserve may vary; check local conditions before visiting.

Culture among fortresses, churches and mosaics

The mosaics provide an archaeological link to the town’s history. The Mirišta site in Petrovac includes two late antique Roman mosaics, which probably served as floor decorations in a building from the 3rd or 4th century. The creation of a late antique mosaic from Petrovac is estimated to date to the mid-4th century; it combines late antique and early Christian artistic traditions. One late antique mosaic composition is rectangular and divided into twelve equal-sized panels.

Churches are also part of the town’s historical landscape: the churches of Saint Thomas and Saint Elias in Petrovac date from the 14th to 15th centuries. In nearby Novoselje, the Church of the Holy Cross was built in the 14th century and is decorated with frescoes from the early 17th century. The nearby Reževići Monastery includes two churches and the remains of a third. These different periods offer several points of interest for culture enthusiasts, without requiring a fixed itinerary.

Spomen dom Crvena komuna is a cultural events center. The Museum of the Revolution is located in Spomen dom Petrovac; its art gallery is named after the painter Marko K. Gregović. The center hosts programs in drama, visual arts and music, particularly in summer. Check specific dates before visiting. The Kastio-Lazaret site, formerly abandoned, has been revitalized with a pier and dining facilities. The availability of individual services may change.

Routes in the surrounding area

A route description from November 2024 describes the Perazića-Do hiking trail as paved and protected by side walls. The path from Petrovac to Perazića Do continues toward Reževići Monastery; the description gives the route as 3 kilometers with an elevation gain of 150 meters. Check local trail conditions before setting out.
