Medieval city walls, churches with a long history and beaches with very different features give Budva its distinctive setting. The Old Town’s cultural offerings and a marina right beside its walls add to its appeal. When looking for a hotel in Budva, it helps to first consider your priorities: would you mainly like to explore the historic townscape, spend time by the water or take transport connections into account?

Old Town: Walls, Churches and Citadel

Budva’s Old Town is a historic town center enclosed by medieval walls with a fortress, towers and gates. Within this ensemble are several sites whose history can be traced through specific construction and dedication dates. The Church of the Holy Trinity was completed in 1804. The Cathedral of Saint John was reconstructed in the 17th century and is dedicated to the Nativity of John the Baptist.

Santa Maria in Punta is located on the “in punta” promontory in the southwestern part of the Old Town. According to a surviving inscription, the church was founded by Benedictines in 840. Today, it is used as an exhibition space and for classical music concerts and performances; the program may vary. This stop links a clearly identifiable corner of the Old Town with cultural offerings whose dates should be planned with the season in mind.

The Budva Citadel occupies the highest point on the southern side of the Old Town and marks the beginning and end of the city walls. Its facilities include a museum and hospitality venues. As facilities and access may change, it is advisable to check current access arrangements before visiting. The Budva City Museum presents archaeological and ethnographic exhibitions; these collections offer another way to explore the city’s history.

Cultural Venues and Summer Program

The Old Town brings together cafés, boutiques, bars, restaurants and galleries. In summer, performances, concerts and exhibitions add to what is on offer. If cultural events are important to your trip, plan with the season in mind and check the latest dates. This makes it possible to combine a stay with time to explore the historic sites without assuming that seasonal programming is available year-round.

Beaches with Different Features

Mogren consists of two beaches connected by a tunnel. A 350-meter concrete path leads there from Hotel Avala. Path conditions may change in severe weather; check them before visiting. Even outside the swimming season, Mogren can be a destination for walkers, anglers and adventure seekers, although weather-related access restrictions may apply. Here, visiting the beach and getting there go hand in hand: those visiting outside the swimming season should consider the conditions as well as the activity they have planned.

Pizana, by contrast, is a 50-meter-long pebble beach next to the Old Town. The marina and restaurants are right beside it. The details describe two different types of coastline: Mogren consists of two beaches connected by a tunnel and has the aforementioned concrete path; Pizana is a short pebble beach next to the marina and restaurants.

Getting There and Finding Your Way

Budva is located at the junction of the Adriatic Highway E65 and the M2.3 road toward Cetinje and Podgorica. Regular bus routes connect the city with Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and North Macedonia. The number of international bus routes increases in summer. As routes and timetables may change, check the connection for your travel dates in advance.

Budva Marina is located right beside the walls of the Old Town. It has 330 commercial berths across 17 sections; all sections have water and electricity connections. Capacity figures and operational facilities may change. The marina is therefore a notable local landmark, but it does not indicate the facilities or services offered by any accommodation. Your own travel plans remain key when choosing a hotel: the Old Town and its culture, the different beach features or transport connections each offer a different focus.
