Photographs and objects preserved by local residents introduce the history of Balti in the history room of the Museum of History and Ethnography. Two other rooms shift the focus from the city’s past to traditional Moldovan domestic life: their themes are “Gospodăria țărănească” and “Casa Mare.” Activities, tools and room furnishings are among the details on display. Together, the rooms offer different approaches: photographs and preserved objects tell the story of the city, while everyday life and furnishings explore domestic culture.

Art and Theatre History

The Pinacoteca „Antioh Cantemir“ is an art gallery in the municipality of Bălți and houses a wide variety of artistic compositions. Every year, it hosts exhibitions featuring works by students from art schools in Bălți and the north of the Republic of Moldova, as well as by young visual artists. Alongside the museum’s ethnographic themes, visitors interested in art will find a distinct focus here: the gallery and its recurring exhibition programme.

The „Vasile Alecsandri“ Music and Drama Theatre also offers a window into the city’s history. Its first building opened in 1934 as the „Scala“ Theatre, with 659 seats. In 1990, the theatre was granted national theatre status; it was the first national drama theatre in the Republic. The two dates mark different milestones: the building’s opening under its name at the time, and the later institutional distinction.

Places of Remembrance in the City

The Catedrala „Sfinții împărați Constantin și Elena“ was founded by Metropolitan Visarion Puiu. Its foundation stone was laid in September 1924. A bust of Puiu stands in the cathedral courtyard, linking the building with the metropolitan who was among its founders.

Another monument stands in the courtyard of „Alecu Russo“ State University. It is dedicated to King Ferdinand I and commemorates the 100th anniversary of the constitution of a united Romania. The text of the proclamation of the constitution, which King Ferdinand signed on 28 March 1923, is inscribed on the Cosăuți stone pedestal. The dedication, commemorative significance and inscription each provide a distinct point of reference. For a cultural and historical perspective on Balti, these details complement the museum and theatre with public places of remembrance.

River and Historical Connections

The waterways are also among the city’s described features: the Răut River runs through Bălți from northeast to southwest, and artificial lakes have also been created in Bălți. The river and lakes provide different landscape features and should not be confused as having the same origins.

Transport history offers another point of reference. By the end of the 19th century, railway lines connected Bălți with Ungheni and Chișinău, as well as with Rîbnița and Ocnița. Construction of the railway was completed in 1894. These historical connections add a temporal perspective to the picture of the city: alongside exhibitions, theatre history and places of remembrance, visitors can also trace the role railway links played in its development at the time.
