Yokdzonot Cenote is located 300 meters south of the town center. Its history as a community-developed ecotourism site, the cycling options at the cenote and the murals depicting the region's flora, fauna and culture offer different ways to plan a trip to Yokdzonot. This means you can consider not only the natural attraction but also how the project came about and the region's cultural themes.

The Community History of the Cenote

In 2005, a group of women from the rural community of Yokdzonot organized to transform their town's abandoned Maya cenote into a community ecotourism site. The transformation was conceived as a community project, making the community's role an essential part of the cenote's history.

In 2007, Yokdzonot Cenote opened as a Maya site for wellness and eco-adventure. Its offerings at the time included services and special attractions for locals and tourists. The dates mark distinct milestones: the group organized in 2005, and the site opened in 2007. The Zaaz Koolen Haá cooperative manages the cenote and maintains the quality of its tourist services.

Cycling Options and Zip Line

The Zaaz Koolen Haá cooperative offers bicycle rentals at the cenote. The operator also offers a three-kilometer bike tour through the jungle to a second cenote at the end of the route. The tour therefore has a named destination and a specified length, while the bicycle rental is described as an option at the cenote. This lets you distinguish between renting a bicycle and taking a specific bike tour when planning your visit.

The operator also describes a zip line that runs 30 meters above the cenote's water. If this particular activity is important to your plans, check its current arrangements before visiting. The bike tour and zip line offer different experiences: the former focuses on the route through the jungle to another cenote, while the latter runs above the water.

Murals Depicting Nature and Culture

In front of the lookout point, murals depicting the region's flora, fauna and culture can be seen along streets and on houses. These themes offer a cultural focus alongside the cycling and water activities. They range from local nature to the area's culture, adding a distinct perspective on the region to the cenote's Maya-related history. If you would like to consider both activity and cultural themes when planning your trip, Yokdzonot offers different topics that can each be explored on their own.

Location and Camping

For orientation, the cenote is located 300 meters south of the town center. The camping area has six platforms around the cenote. If you are planning to camp overnight, check availability in advance. The location and number of platforms provide two specific points of reference as you consider which aspects of Yokdzonot matter for your stay.
