Choosing Sisal means focusing on three clear themes: beaches, wetland nature, and history. Sisal is located within the El Palmar State Reserve; activities include swimming at the beach and observing nature, alongside historical sites.

Beach and Lighthouse

Sisal Beach stretches for several kilometers and has white sand and turquoise water. It is suitable for swimming and various water sports; conditions may vary seasonally. The lighthouse stands just a few meters from the beach and is one of Sisal’s main attractions. If you want to focus your stay on beach activities, take changing conditions into account when planning.

Wetlands and Wildlife Watching

The El Palmar State Reserve is a Ramsar site and lies within the sphere of influence of the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor. Sisal’s wetlands provide habitat for a sizable colony of pink flamingos. Wildlife is also part of the nature activities on offer, but sightings cannot be planned as a certain outcome.

A kayak tour passes through an estuary and a protected area on the Yucatán coast, with mangroves and freshwater springs. Flamingos and seasonally arriving birds are the focus; the animals should not be disturbed. Sightings are seasonal and not guaranteed. Guided kayak tours through protected areas are also offered in Sisal. Birdwatching is possible, and walks through the mangroves are another nature activity.

The activities differ in focus: the kayak tour centers on wildlife watching, while walks take you through the mangroves. The coral reefs near Sisal are also suitable for snorkeling. When planning, distinguish between seasonally changing beach conditions and the uncertainty of individual bird sightings.

History and Tradition

Sisal was an important seaport during the colonial period. The Ex Aduana MarĂtima was built around 1813; the restored building serves as the Centro Cultural de Sisal. If you plan to visit the cultural center, check the local opening arrangements in advance.

A boat procession on August 25 is part of the religious tradition: it brings the Cristo Negro from the church in Hunucmá to Sisal. The fishing community’s seasonal activities take place at a different time. During the grouper closed season in early February, it offers boat trips, horseback rides, guided tours, and other tourist activities. The procession is tied to a specific calendar date, while the fishing community’s offerings are tied to the seasonal closed season.

Getting There from Mérida

Sisal is accessible via YUC 281. It is 70 kilometers from Mérida, and the approximate drive takes one hour and 20 minutes. Actual travel time may vary depending on traffic and conditions. If Mérida is your starting point, check the route and driving time before setting out. The themes mentioned above can also help you decide whether Sisal suits your interests: the coast and water sports, nature watching, or colonial history.
